Triathlon - Got a NEW 2 ME Tri-bike!

Just picked it up, this is my first Tri-bike so I just got my cherry popped! I picked up a Scott "Waimea" 58cm with Mavic Wheels set and all kinds of goodies.

200 dollars!

It really suprised me it was listed for 300 dollars and I emailed her and she came back and said "motivated to sell"
I asked to meet her and she stepped out the car and all I could think was "DAAAANGGG" this lady wears a size 12 mens bike shoe if that explains it, she was only an inch shorter than me and I'm 6'2". But I asked her the price again after pedaling around the cars for a few and she said "you got 200?" "why yes I do" I handed her the money, threw it in the truck and sped off before she changed her mind.

and too think I almost spent 300 on a no-named bike or my wife almost bought me a GMC denali from wally-world.EEEWWWWW!

Hey, nothing at all wrong with a used tri bike. Mine is used, and has taken me across the finish line of two IM's, three halfs, and a good number of other tris.

i have a gmc denali and there nothing wrong with that either! it does its job perfectly!

I just read about 50 different places about the spokes breaking and the tire popping in the first 10 miles on the road, I was kinda worried about having to buy a wheel set so short after buying a new bike.

Looking at the picture it seems to have Mavic CXP 30´s on there, they should be fine assuming you´re not 350lbs+

I train on Mavic Cosmic Experts of a similar vintage, they´ve been fine and have less spokes.

Very nice grab. There is someone locally selling a QuintanaRoo tri bike around here. I covet the the thing so bad, but I think I have a few more important purchases to make before tri. Once again, nice pickup mang.

i guess it has to do with the rider or you might have to just be lucky
my denali i got at a garage sale the person selling it got it at walmart and rode it for 100 miles. i got it for really cheap and the only thing needed to be done to it was a new tube. otherwise its been out on the road for another 60 miles (i stop in the winter!) its a good bike and deserves a little bit more credit and i plan on getting new everything for it soon!
but a tri-bike for 200 cant beat that!

Some people on these bike sites will beat you up about the entry level bike and wally-world bikes ect... but as I see it if it works "WHY NOT" I totally agree, they don't get that some people cant afford an expensive bike.

It like going on a car site and telling everyone you just bought a new jetta and then getting bashed because they feel like you should save your money up and just buy a good used Rolls Royce.

Its not everyone but I got the speech from several on a local site but everyone in here was pretty cool when I thought I was getting a Vilano. These Tri-Guys are a good group of people!

I started out on a gmc denali I used to raced across florida back when I lived in orlando.
that was a 120 or so mile race. from orlando to the west coast. back to the east coast. then to orlando.

Yes, us bike guys on these sites can be tough! Kind of like the fatherly toughness though. We would rather be tough on people and answer their questions honestly, then keep blowing smoke and telling people the bike they just got is Awesome even though it might fall apart in the next 150 miles. Just my opinion. I myself have a stable of crappy bikes and even my "Good" bikes are not nearly nice enough to even consider a good bike on these forums. But that is understood.

Anyways, helluva pickup for 200 bucks with that Scott. They are sweet bikes and to have a bunch of addons (wheels cost that much alone) for 200 dollars is an incredible find. Enjoy the ride, smile for a while.

I have an entry level frame, but I have slowly upgrading it. In the end you are 90% equation.

i found a zipp 303 or some older brand zipp front wheel but it was listed as a 303 for 50 bucks, I was about 10 minutes to late, he had just sold it. But I'm on the look out for good parts. Also found a Ritchy carbon 650c fork and I'm debating on picking that up for 25 dollars.

I personally am very wary about buying 2nd hand carbon stuff. You never know where it´s been.

Just to qualify that, I have carbon stuff on all my bikes (forks), including one immaculate 2nd hand carbon fork, but you should inspect it VERY carefully for any sign of crash damage, nicks to the carbon weave, big dings etc etc.

Looks great, you can find used aero forks for a decent price which would really help with your drag. The fork hits clean air and a round tubed road fork like that isnt helping you.

Its probably a 1" steerer tube, but if its 1 1/8" a fork like this one (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5574735911&toolid=10001&campid=5336500245&customid=&icep_item=180448661314&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) would work great and help with the aerodynamics.

it seems like right now all my money is being dumped in to cycling gear, shoes, tri-short, jerseys, when does it end???

it looks like a cool fork but I gotta find a 650c fork I've seen some Ritchys and Eastons go for under a hundred so after the cloths shopping stops.

Pedals too?!? Wow, you did get a great deal. Those look like the older Speedplay X-2, which would be really nice. They have a grease port so you can service them. Since a new set of X-5 will run you about $115, I would say that having someone throw in a bike is close to the deal of the year, congrats! Plus, the frame looks to be in good shape from the pic.

For what it's worth, I saw a guy at last year's season opener hammering like a madman on what looked to be the Schwinn equivalent of a Denali, and he was tearing up the course. I'm sure NO ONE was giving him a hard time about his bike. Scott is a solid brand, and you should have no worries. Now just get your position dialed in and start packing on the miles!

We had a 3 page agrument in the 41 forum about which ones they were, it turns out they are the discontinued X3 pedals I also got a pair of LG Garneau shoes with the cleats but they are too small,they are size 13 and I need a 14 or a size 49 Euro.

yeah I just got back from being fitted for a helmet and a pair of shoes. They had an Obrea with Reynolds carbon wheels to the tune of almost 7k, I think they were mad cause I dookied all over myself when I saw the price tag. I would love a newer Tri-Specific bike but will never spend that kinda money, Scott makes some killer bikes and after I get my first Ironman under my belt then I'll look into a newer Scott.

The lady at the bike store had 3 Ironman races completed, she's 4' 10" and maybe 110lbs she rides a kids made Specialized 41cm road bike and she had my daughter all pumped up and ready to do her first IronKids race in May. LOL!

Good People and they'll get my buisness from here on out, and they have a team of 25 on there Tri-Team and they hold classes every wendsday to help people learn.

Sounds like you've found a good shop! If the X-3s are in good working order, you should be good to go. BTW, if they ever give you any trouble, re-build kits used to be available from Speedplay, which included new pedal bodies and bearings I think. If memory serves me correctly, I saw a kit not too long ago for around $30 or so. A good LBS should be able to order a kit for you if they don't carry them.

I finally got my shoes in and they fit, I screwed in the cleats and too it for a quick ride with just one shoe until I learnd how to work these pedals, i looked nuts riding around with one shoe and a sock.

One leg drills are supposed to be good for us, right? ;) I love the Speedplay pedals, or at least my knees do. The only issues I ever have are if there is a long run out of T1 and I'm not leaving my shoes attached to the bike - running in those cleats took a little getting used to.
