This is a record using disc wheels and a deep dish carbon front, pacing behind a derny.

okay gramps. steel is real, vintage italian, Campagnolo, there is that better! that guy would lay you in the dust anyday! I think it's cool that some one put in the effort and time to do this. till you set a new record stfu!
Can someone explain that stem and bar setup? It looks like he's got them jacked up above to saddle level. If you posted this in the Road forum, you'd have a dozen people saying your frame is too small. But he just set a world record, so obviously there's some method to that madness.

maybe handling? i dunno. if you look at the seat drop to the drops where he would be riding it's still pretty agressive.

When did they start using a derny?

The bars are shaped strange. Note that the drop ends are about where a normal setup would be. It looks like the intent is to get him really stretched out and stay comfortale while keeping a flat back for the full hour.

The handlebar height is set higher to help the rider breath more effectively. Aerodynamics are not as critical since he is slipstreaming a large upright object.

Does anyone know how long those cranks are? By my calculation he was turning about 96 RPM @ 66.4 kph, which would allow him to torque the gear with very long cranks.
When did they start using a derny?
Motor pacing is a very old event, probably dating back to the 30's or before. Prior to motors, racers would pace behind tandems or triplex bikes.

Barrettscv is correct re. positioning. Motorpaced riding is typically done in such a position, as can be seen in the photo Superdex posted.
FWIW, for many years (my years included) motorpaced racing was almost exclusively the province of older, semi-retired riders, ex-pros, etc., as it didn't draw crowds (it's actually kind of boring to watch, after the initial spectacle has worn off) so didn't pay much, especially considering the additional dangers involved. So there's really nothing too special about respectable performances turned in by an older man. Reading through the list of world motorpacing champions will produce multiple 40-50 year old winners.

I've seen dernys for sale from the 1900s (before 1910). They typically had gargantuan motors (1500-2000cc), and I've heard they made quite a motoring spectacle belching flames out of open pipes. The motors were huge, bigger than street MC of the time, because the technology of the day was such that just your usual 1000cc wouldn't go fast enough to really work the bike rider.

No saddle needed when your gear is so huge you couldn't turn it seated anyways.
Would be fun to try. Just need a REALLY BIG push to get moving.
That helmet is amazing/ridiculous. What kind is it?

Meh. "Stunt" records...
Any one of us could go set the "no handlebars" record, or the "flat tires" record, or the "one legged" record. And no one would care, other than you, your mother, and maybe three guys on the internet.

For lots of people laying down 45 km in an hour would be an accomplishment as the hour record for seating cycling is only 49.7 km... but to attempt that while standing ?
That is a feat, not a stunt.

The heaviest weight dangled from a swallowed sword is 25 kg (55 lb 1 oz) and was achieved by Thomas Blackthorne (UK) on the set of Lo Show Dei Record, in Italy, on 19 April 2009.
Lots of people would find lifting 55 pounds an accomplishment...

LMAO - As an older rider constantly seeking new performance records, I resemble that remark.

You could try for the under 5'2" hour record.
Or the "near-total lack of pigmentation" one.
Me, I'm considering the "big gut/no ass" record, or perhaps the "bearded guy holding a Bitburger while riding a borrowed bicycle several sizes too small" record.
Remember, it's a feat, not a stunt.

I respect the man, the cyclist, but not the record.
Its you & the bike, nothing else.
Fabian will do it the right way.
Any speed records for being towed by a Ferrari???...

Sorry, I'm 5'5", so can't qualify for the 5'2" hour record. Chowmom does, however.
I can totatly do the near total lack of pigmentation record--someone has to bring a black light so I can glow in the dark as I do laps.
I don't do stunts, but I do have feats.
Change that to a Bitbuger mini-keg, with auto-dispensor lashed to a rack attached to the bike and then we'll have us some competition. Winner of each lap has to chug.

I'm thinking that this falls into the category of best human effort. Fabian is going after the hour record
