I am doing a ride from Los Gatos down to Gilroy and back this weekend. Since the weather looks better on Sunday I am planning for that day instead of the usual Saturday.. Even so, there is a good chance of some amount of rain on Sunday but I will still be riding assuming it's not absolutely pouring down buckets.

Meet at Starbucks at 624 Blossom Hill Rd, Los Gatos, CA at 8:00am. Here is a map of the route that also shows where the starting point is:

http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=rcbhlpamsajdkjxd

It's 103 miles and somewhere between 4000-5000' of climbing depending on which web site you believe. This is made up mostly of rollers. The longest sustained climb is about 700' on Leavesley road to the northeast of Gilroy. There's also a 600 footer on some residential roads after that.

I want to get back before sundown to avoid having to bring a headlight. Assuming we roll at 8:15am and get back at 4:45pm this is 8.5 hours. Throw in 1.5 hours of stopping and that is 7 hours of riding time or 14.7 mph average pace.

If you plan to come please let me know so we don't leave without you. Also it's probably a good idea to bring water resistant gear :)

Good, wet, long ride. Enjoyed the area. Nice riding with Ben and Bogden, the only other two men to show up on a rainy December morning.

I would have done the ride solo but it was more fun with other people. Thanks for coming along! I liked the all the rainbows and green grassy hills and the tailwind on the way back and tearing along the bike trail at 22mph :)

It really wasn't that bad. After a while, you're saturated and you might as well enjoy it. I was definitely feeling the distance for the final 8-10 miles though. And my bike was making a terrible, terrible noise from the rain, and it felt like the chain wasn't seating on the cog correctly and constantly slipping a quarter-in...

Yeah you have to accept the rain and just be content with the wetness. The earlier you get into this mindset the better. If I had been cringing at each raindrop I wouldn't have lasted long out there.

We actually saw a lot of other bikes, like 50-100 of them. They were all going the opposite direction on Uvas Rd and spread out in clusters along a couple miles of the road. Other than that big group though we saw probably < 10 other cyclists the entire ride :D

dang, i was feeling the distance after the first 8-10 miles ;) fun, as always. got a kick out of seeing my bike "pee" and that cup of soup hit the spot. was a little surprised to see what looked like the entire SJBC out on Uvas
