General Cycling Discussion - Popping noise from crank / bottom bracket on NEW Madone

I get a "popping" noise when the bike is being pedaled. The bike is brand new. I did change the cassette from an 11-26 to an 11-28. It is not a every pedal stroke. VERY random. It appears to do it only in the small chain ring. ANY IDEAS????

I've had a couple of problems like this. I suspected the BB, but it turned out to be an under-greased pedal, which is regrettably common even with new pedals. I suggest note whether it occurs when you exert force only on the right or left pedal. Other than that I can only suggest you see everything's tight and aligned.
My other problem like this came with a cheap Shimano or Truvativ crankset, it having special bumps on the inside surfaces of the chainrings to facilitate smooth shifting. Those caused the chain to deflect while remaining on the same chainring. It was very inefficient and annoying. See whether the chain deflects and makes the noise while riding.

Try a film of grease on your seat rails. :thumb:

I will grease the pedals tomorrow. They are speedplays. Any idea if these have a history of doing that. They too are brand new. Film of grease on the seat rails????

Are you certain it is Crank/BB area?

Saddle creaks can appear in various places on the bike- as can Bar stem creaks. So can broken tubes and damaged spokes on the wheels. All of these "Have" been the cause of mysterious Crank noises so check them out aswell.

But if you can't find the noise in 5 minutes of searching- get the bike back to the LBS. Let them spend their time in Finding it?

Little creaks and pops and what not can drive yew crazy. I had one that went on and on. I tore apart the bottom bracket, repacked the bearings in the hubs (this was some years back) cleaned and lubed the drive train, lubed the pedals, cleaned and lightly greased the saddle rails. It only happened when a pedalled. It turned out to be a hairline crack in the weld on my rear water bottle cage. Eventually the cage started to fail and it became obvious. I replaced the cage and the mysterious noise ceased. Good luck on finding yours.

OK. Shop said it was the rear wheel. Replaced it yesterday. HOPE this works!

YAHOO!! After doing a pretty strenuous ride Saturday, there was NO noise. It appears I had a faulty rear hub (splines and pauls). Thanks for ALL the advice.

And FWIW, my crank noise was settled with a tightening of the saddle bolt...:twitchy:
