Where are the legs typically bonded to the crown on a fork with an aluminum steerer/crown and carbon legs? The carbon facade on most crowns makes it difficult to tell.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to know if it's possible to file the crown a bit for some extra clearance. Obviously you can't file carbon, but I'm thinking it may be ok for the aluminum part of the crown.
