After months of dithering, trying bikes, and contemplating custom, I finally bought my long-distance bike. I settled on a Terry Symmetry frame, swapped the Tiagra rear der for a Deore XT, changed the cassette so my largest cog is a 30 rather than a 25, changed the drop bars to a flat with bar ends, put on a Vaude Handlebar bag, Shimano 545 pedals, Specialized Afterburner Pro tail-light & a Topeak Mountain Morph pump (couldn't fit a Road Morph on the frame). I pick it up tomorrow night. Let Tuesday be a dry day!

FYI, Jean, we got six inches of snow and sub-zero (F.) windchills over the last couple of days, and I think it's headed your way. So ride while you can... :(

Yeah, my Mom got about 6 inches yesterday, with heavy wind. She's in WI. So far they are talking rain for us, and we surely need it. I suppose I can wait anouther day if I have to.

Congrats, Jean!

Sounds like a great bike, and you've really personalized it to suit your needs.
Good luck and be happy!

Congrats on the bike. Isn't this your second Terry? They must be doing something right.

It is my second Terry. Besides fit which is better than the Trek WSD or Cannondale Fem. (for me), the price is right. $1200 for the whole package. Also, Georgena Terry is very supportive of her customers. The frame is NOS from a Terry dealer, and Georgena e-mailed me advice on how to modify to suit me & my riding better.

Congratulations on your new ride, Jean!

I just wanted to second your comments about Georgena Terry. In fact the whole company is about as helpful as you could ask for a bike builder to be. I bought my Terry more than 10 years ago, and they've been consistently responsive to my questions about modifications, painting, etc.

A year or so ago I got a custom touring bike, but I'm not letting go of my old Terry Symmetry. It's great for quick road rides and also a "guest bike" for those times when I can coax unsuspecting visitors out for a ride.

Have fun with your new customized Symmetry!

What is wrong with the WSD bikes? are they not W enough?

Congratulations!

:)

(Whenever I think of J. B. Smith, I don't think of her bike, I think about a die-hard, northeastern female bike commuter. The bike pales in comparison ;) )

The Cannondale frame seemed bigger than stated size. The Trek WSD handlebar was way off for me, even with their short reach brake levers, I could not comfortably shift gears. To brake from the drops, or shift from the drops I had to angle my wrists too much. Bear in mind, I'm at the extreme low end of even the WSD size range, and I'm almost 55 with a fair amount of arthritic problems in my hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders. I'm sure both of those bikes would have been fine for someone 5'2" and 25 years old.

Sorry, Michael, my post had nothing to do with yours. I saw that afterwards.
