simple question, whats an affordable track bike (good for learning - i havent done this before) <500$? a little more would be fine, but lower would be nice.

If you're going to a track, most of them have a rental program. Rent a bike to see what you would change (if anything) so you have an idea of what you want or don't want. Inquire about used bikes - they must sell some off at some point. And ask the riders around if they're selling anything.

Yeah, try it on a rental and see if you like it. If you buy a $500 track bike then find you really like the track you'll be unhappy with your cheap track bike about 5 minutes later. Investigate, then invest in proper equipment.

I just looked around the webs and found a local velodrome, its called Hellyer velodrome or something. They have rentals, but I have to bring my own pedals. How would I start learning? Any affordable pedals? Iro has a cheap plastic clip set for 20 dollars.

I assume you use clipless pedals on your road bike. Just take the pedals off your road bike and use those at Hellyer.

I was just there for the first time on Saturday.
They have saturday 'beginner' sessions.

Anyway, there are sessions on Saturday mornings, allegedly every saturday morning that it's not raining. I showed up at 8:15 or so, paid $6 to park at Hellyer, paid $5 for the session, and another $5 to rent a bike.
The actual 'renting' starts at 8:30 and if last week was any indication, you could show up at 8:45 and still be OK as long as you don't dwaddle.
The actual 'training' starts at 9:00 with some instructions, drills, warmups, etc. for about 90 minutes... and then some 'races' that don't really count for anything, until about 12:00.
You're required to go through 3 Saturday morning sessions in order to do anything else; but the calendar there is pretty chock full of events.... assuming you're a sprinter.
Hope to see you there. I'm out this weekend but will prob. be there the weekend after.
