Shimano 105 STI Left Brifter circa 1993 (8 speed).

My old bike is my trainer. I haven't used it in 8 months and now discovered that the shifter for the front derailleur doesn't ratchet or click and hold.

Should the lever still click even without cable tension?

I've tried it with the cable tight and with the cable removed from the front derailleur.

Both levers move freely all the way to their limit (not stopped by cable tension).

The big lever will move the chain to the big ring when I push it but as soon as I let go the lever moves back as does the the derailleur. The front derailleur works fine. All of my searches said the only repair is to ****** it with WD-40. It's been indoors for the last 4 years so I doubt it is from a build of of grease & crud.

Is it fixable or do I look for a replacement?

Grease will congeal sitting around. I would flush it out with WD-40 first. Otherwise you're screwed.

Lack of use allows the grease to dry out and thicken. The WD 40 flush is the best bet to rescue it. The shimano brifters are not rebuildable.
