Here's my dilemma -- a kid just knocked three bikes over on top of my Spinergy Rev X rear wheel, cracking the right side of the Kevlar around the hub. The wheel is basically trashed. I have zero, and I mean ZERO, dollars in my budget for bike at the moment. I probably won't have any $$ for bike until next year. My bike is 9 speed Ultegra. I have an old wheel from when my bike was 7 speed Ultegra.

I am told there is no way to switch out the freehub from the Spinergy wheel to the old wheel. What is my choice from here? I suppose I could change out the shifting components back to the old 7 speed downtube shifters but that doesn't excite me all that much. That's better than not riding the road bike, I guess.

Any advice will be gladly accepted, even if the advice is to slap me up side the head for being a moron!

If you get a 9-speed Shimano freehub body it will fit onto your 7-speed hub but you'll also need to get a 9-speed axle set and redish the wheel. If you do the work yourself, the cost should be well under $50.00.

If you do all of your riding around Urbana Illinois, why worry about gears anyway?

Thanks for the advice. Makes sense.

Hey now, I live in the Chicago area. There are a few hills around here! Urbana, on the other hand, is FLAT. I was an hour south of Urbana.

Um, get the kid, or whoever is financially responsible for her/his conduct, to pay for the replacement of your wheel.

That's another option!
