Cog set just came loose... I have that set and the outer sealing ring in hand. What broke?
The retaining ring / littlest cog?
Did this happen on the bike?

Whole 5 gear cog.. while riding. I removed the wheel and have those two pieces in hand.

Is the inner part of the freewheel still screwed on to the wheel? If so, you need to replace the freewheel.

Yes. Trying to learn which part failed..........
Your terminology is a little mixed up. Maybe you should post a picture of the parts.

The 5 gear cluster and the thin chrone threaded ring came off.. the main body of the FW remains mounted. Is that clear enough.. camera is gone today.
I think you mean it is a cassette and freehub, rather than a freewheel.
If it's a cassette, probably nothing broke, but the lockring wasn't put on tight enough. Did you do it yourself?

Cassette or Freewheel? http://www.sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html
The torque-spec on the lockring is quite high, you'll need wrench with at least 12" handle to get up to the proper torque.

Yet another reason that having torque-wrenches is a very good idea. Most especially if you are planning to install such animals as lock-rings on cassettes - or installing bottom-brackets & cranksets.

Here's what it'll look like if you have a freewheel that came apart

I have the ring at far right.. and the gear set. I know a FW vs a FH..........
There's two thin metal O rings like the one bottom center.. still on the remaining FW shaft. I believe the two remaing pictured parts are still on the remaining hub shaft...........if that be what one calls it.
LOOKED at the FW closer.. set the cog set back on.. the metal that protrudes from the shaft is broke.. a piece fell off. That seems to me is the inside clip ( one pictured at left part...just above that bottom threaded section) that keeps the cog set onto the shaft. Shaft is still tight on the axle... that whole pile is trash now.. save the gear set I imagine. Off an older wheel.. have no idea which one.. sez DNP.. Taiwan. Could be the original from the Schwinn Traveler.. has lots of miles on it.
