Bicycle Mechanics - Specialized headtube / bearing problem

I was recently given an '05 Specialized Transition frame from a friend. He told me if I can fix it or get it fixed I can have it.

Here is the problem. In attempting to remove the headset he blew apart both the top and bottom bearings. Leaving just the outer race stuck in the headtube. This frame uses the Mindset headset from Specialized.

He then tried to cut the race out. The pictures below show the results. He managed to get a small chunk of the race out.

I was doing some research and came across this thread. http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-267183.html.

From this I understand that the black cups under the bearing can be removed and then a Cane Creek headset can be used.

So, first would a Specialized dealer or other shop mechanic be able to pull the bearing race(s) that are stuck out and the black cups underneath?

If not, could I continue to cut and try to cut into the race and into the black cup to get those to come out? When my friend was trying to cut out the race he didn't know the black cup was removable so he was trying to get the race to separate from that. Since I don't need the black cup, I think cutting right through the race without regard to the black cup (but still being careful of the headtube) will allow them to be taken out.

So I went down to a Specialized dealer on my way to school, which is what my friend should have done in the first place. They popped em right out. The black cup is actually part of the outer race of the bearing.

The headstube survived with only small damage. There is a small gash in the surface that the bearing is seated on (see pic).

I was planning on using a cane creek headset, but the shop mechanic said I should probably use another Mindset because of the gash. He also didn't know that a cane creek could be used, but that I already know is possible.

So now I'm wondering if I could (or should) fill in that gash with something like JB Weld?? Can I still use a Cane creek headset or should I get a Mindset as the mechanic suggested??

Hard to tell 100% from the pic, but it doesn't look as if enough of the diameter is mangled enough to cause another bearing not to seat. I wouldn't use jb weld personally.

Ya the gash is very small.

So it's best to just leave it and not fill it with anything? Or is JB weld just a bad choice, is there something more suitable?

Just use a Mindset. The cost is not that much.

Thats what I've decided to do. I only wanted to use the cane creek because I already had a set and I wanted to get this build up and running ASAP. The mindset seems like a better choice in the case since it gets some extra support from the sleeve section in the headtube.... probably better considering the minor damage to the headtube.

I'm going to order the mindset tomorrow, the shop said with would be between $40-60.
