View Full Version : Strippers

In an effort to maintain the clean looks of my bike, I wanted to remove some of the logos on new parts. My bars, stem, and seatpost all have a black anodized finish, with screened logos. Has anyone used a paint stripper to remove logos without damaging the rest of the finish? Please don't suggest anything you haven't used yourself. I can go into Lowes and look at that wall of chemical goodness any time. But I want to know which one has been proven to work.

If you are trying to "maintain" the clean looks, then don't change a thing.

Paint stripper is powerful stuff--- and you are not really dealing with paint for most logos (unless you want to remove clearcoating, then the logo). I would start with your fingernail before pulling out the artillery.

It's just some sort of paint that's been screened onto the anodized components, no clear coating. A fingernail won't remove it, but anything else will probably scratch it. As far as I'm aware, a paint stripper won't affect the anodized finish.

Nail polish remover (aka acetone) -- screened logos wipe off easier than dirt

As a professional screenprinter, I can tell you that there are a lot of chemicals that will remove the logos without damaging the finish depending on what type of ink was used. Try rubbing alcohol first. If that doesn't work, nail polish remover should do the trick. Just don't leave it on too long or use too much, as it can soften some paints and clear coats.

Nail polish remover didn't even budge it. But now my nails are stronger.

It must have been printed with an epoxy ink then. Finding something that will remove the print without damaging or removing the finish might be tricky.

That's just it. I don't know what will remove paint without damaging the anodized finish. And not that you suggested it, but I'm not about to take sandpaper to a $100 stem.

Best bet is probably to leave it alone. Clearly not serious enough about look.

You sound like my wife. :)

Seriously, if acetone won't take it off, you could try 'aircraft remover' but I have not personally tried this so YMMV.

If it's anodized, lacquer thinner and a soft cloth may work without damaging anything. If it's painted, however, you'll end up with a mess.

Adriano, you need new pics.

My intent was to remove the paint and the anodization, but the Jasco took the paint clean off without touching what was underneath. It took several applications of oven cleaner to melt the ano off.

I can confirm that I used jasco to remove both paint and powdercoat from rims, and it didn't even touch the anodizing underneath.

I just bought a can of Jasco, and it failed to remove the logo from my seatpost.

What seatpost Brian? I'm thinking of getting one that has a black screen print (I think) and I want to remove the logo as well. I thought jasco was some really strong stuff!

You're not trying to remove the logo from Thomson stuff, are you? If so, they're laser-etched and will be there forever.

Apparently, FSA uses the same technique on their Thomson knockoff.

I'm pretty sure they might. My wife had an FSA stem on one of her bikes a while back and from what I recall, those logos were etched.
I'm no doctor but if nothing has any effect on removing them, I'd say that's the case.

I'll give it to my machinist neighbor, and have him give it the brushed treatment.
