Eastern Canada - How come people like biking alot more recently?

The people biking on road's and paths is growing greatly... I mean really a few years ago i would see no one biking now i see a lot of people biking! That's cool and all but it also increases the amount of people on path's like the waterfront trail which is already high traffic. So why do you think this is happening recently?

I think here in London it's because of a recent transit strike. Not to mention the exorbitant price of gas and insurance.

I have only been biking about 2 months...

I have no idea why I one day said I want to start riding a bike. But I went to my LBS and bought a Cannondale CAAD8. I rode a few others and it seemed to feel the most comfortable. I haven't regretted it yet. I ride my bike to work every day (only 3 miles) and on the way home I always take the scenic route. I also make a longer ride every other Saturday. I feel healthier, I enjoy the ride home from work, and I'm still terrified of nearly every car that flies by. I also am helping some far more experienced biker urge the City Council to consider adding bike lanes in our city.

So I began on a whim and there is no end in sight....

I think it might have something to do with all the organized races and rides out there. it seems like every LBS has a race team and a few have regular rides. On the other hand, the introduction of the Mountain Bike has made biking even more popular.

Damn really? At around St.Clair and Bathurst my 3km trip (3km one way) i see 4 or so bicyclist's each way.

As long as they stay on their right and don't take up the whole path, I'm happy.
But the best thing about the increase in cyclist is that... maybe now the city will pool more money into fixing/creating bike routes. (Sherbourne street has probably the most awful bike lane I have ever ridden on lol)

It's great that more people are into biking now. :) It's a great way to enjoy outdoors for me and family.

Okay, after two weeks of seeing no one at all on bikes, riding home last night in the snow I finally saw two other cyclists.

Together.

On a tandem.

Go figure.

In mississauga at this time of the year, it's very rare to see a cyclist. But I do see them occassionally. Most of the people I see on bikes in winter are teenagers. Commuter cyclists are a very rare breed around here.Recreational cyclists become extinct between november and late march, around here.

No PST on bikes under 1000 certainly has helped encourage the cycling 'trend'. It is comforting to see other cyclists (I only see 2 regulars, the rest come out to play during the summer) commuting regularly to the GO station especially during winter.

People = sheep.

Sheeple?

I would think it's do to the fact that people are a lot more comitted to getting in better shape, and cycling does that. Also, biking is easier on the environment than driving a car. And of course, it's great fun!!

Me: Younge/Sheppard to Keele/Steeles and back (15km each way fwiw).... zero today, but then again it's March...

Well im guessing your living in a Car based community.

I saw tons of cyclists today as well as people running during my 55k ride.

Me? Well when you look at a bike-route map of Toronto my location (York Mills/Yonge) is a blackhole for proper paths. The only place I routinely see bikes in Toronto is downtown, i.e. Bloor or Queen (or when I see or join the donut ride). Today I passed one cyclist on my commute. I'd love to see more.... with a 45 minute ride each way I would expect to see more but as you say the area north of the 401 is very much a "car based community" to my dismay. I do like occasionally joining TBN on their group rides out of Finch Station or Edwards Gardens, though....

This week it's like someone opened the floodgates. 5 or 10 riders per day.

Yup, the salmon are out and they are everywhere!

I'm still driving at the moment (winter parking done by end of month) But from bayview steeles to yonge sheppard I see like 3-4 each way and that's me going through the small neighbourhood roads which is what I usually take with my bike and the traffic there is much less and safer.

Saw about 10-15 today, despite the rain and cold... commuters mostly. The "honkers" were out also though, too bad.

It amazes me the number dressed in dark clothes without lights or helmet at night who do then take to the road.
Anyway, in search of greater distances between traffic lights I headed north of Toronto on Leslie this morning and quit counting at 50 the number of roadies. I was pleased. Later when asking a couple stopped by the road about the area I learned there was an "Unofficial" TBN ride going on. I've never been on one. Maybe later.
