Northern California - Modesto Area 100 route suggestions (or Stockton, Turlock, East Bay)
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am going to be in Modesto this coming weekend. I need to get a long ride in (100 miles +/-). I'm looking for suggestions. I would like it to be flatish, some climbing is fine. Ideally I am looking for good roads in terms of saftey and smooth pavement. I realize I'm not going to find 100 miles of good pavement, but some routes will have more than others. I will check bikely, but it's hard to get a feel for what the roads will be like just using that site.
Any of you Modesto area riders have a suggestion? I could ride north toward Stockton and add miles there if any Stockton riders have ideas. Or south toward Turlock if there are options there. West toward the Bay area (even Patterson Pass if I must). You get the idea.

...any Stockton riders have ideas...
I;m not familiar w/ rides in Modesto. Last year the TOC finished in Modesto, the route they took into town is located on MapMyRide (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/ca/san-jose/460253702591). It looked kind of remote and I'm sure you can do an out and back to get your 100 in.
Another idea would be to call World of Wheels (209.522.0804). Since they're the Specialized Dealer and hold regular group rides, they might be able to steer you to a decent ride.
One final suggestion is contact the local club (http://stancobike.org/index.html) and see where they're riding or if they can suggest a 100 miler for you.
And one more final suggestion would be to find the recent century that was down there a few month ago and follow that route.

Living in Modesto, the best route starting in the city would probably something like this done as an out and back.. http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ca/modesto/408126100505992914...adjusting a little if you need more distance. To be honest, the riding around Modesto isn't too great but its not horrible, just lots of orchards. If you're willing to drive for about 30min south to Patterson there's an amazing ride through del puerto canyon.. but it can get quite hilly :thumb:

Perhaps head out east towards Woodward Reservoir and out to Knight's Ferry using backroads (stay off 108/120). I don't know what route to suggest as I've never ridden out that far, but I know there are people here that have. You'll have to add some roundabout way to get in 100 miles.
You can also ride out east past Claus and down Milnes (which is between Sylvan and Briggsmore/Parker off of Claus). It eventually ends and turns north and into Crow/Milnes, but I'm sure you can keep going on some decent roads. I've only ever gone out to where it turns north then headed back (for a total of 30 miles so you'd really need to add some sort of loop in or keep going).
I quite like River Road through the Ripon area. Nice size bike lane, decent pavement, not a lot of traffic or stops, and I almost always see at least one other cyclist out there.

Thank you for all the suggestions. To Thecyclist, I clicked on your route and like the looks of it (based on what I think I know about that area). Is it tough to get through Oakdale without getting lost? Also, how bad is that section of Hwy 120? Looks like I can get at least 75 miles from your route based on my starting point. Maybe if I take loopybunny's suggestion and add the eastern section of River Road to Jack Tone and back on my return trip I can get closer. May also be able to add a bit in the Knights Ferry area.
Benridin, I thought about the ToC route. I seem to remember (from the TV coverage) that the run-in from I-5ish to Modesto was a bit questionable without the benefit of the closed roads that they had, but I'll check into it. I forgot about the Century, is it the Wine and Cheese one? If so I may be able to incorporate some of that into the route that thecyclist mentioned.
Again, thank you.
