General Cycling Discussion - What have you learnt about business while biking

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,
I just wrote a blog post about what biking has taught me about business (http://blog.aparicio.org/2009/12/16/what-biking-has-taught-me-about-business/). I definitely find that, as a hobby, the practice of the sport is rich in lessons for entrepreneurs and business people.
I thought I'd stop by the General Cycling discussion forum and ask others to share their favorite lessons.

ok...but anything could've taught you that. Learning to program, photography, stamp collecting, anything. I thought you were talking about how the cycling industry taught you about business.
cause if every business was like a local bike shop, the world would be filled with a lot more slackers that are looking to spend the least amount of money to fix a problem, instead of doing it correctly. If every business took a LBS approach, there would be nobody looking into renewable energy or technology. In the same way bike shops will sand the brake pads and throw some WD-40 on the hubs to make your brakes quit squealing, businesses would just stall doing anything to actually fix problems.
any way you look at it, bikes aren't life, and life isn't biking. it's just fun. IMO, too much thought is put into making connections where connections don't exist
and yeah, I know that's not really what you were getting at :P

Oh. You mean like politicians?

Nahh... you are right, can't be taken too seriously. Somehow, especially for me, biking took a lot more than the other things you mention, so the persistence, in particular, was an important lesson.
Oh. You mean like politicians?
+1. exactly!
Oh. You mean like politicians?
??? Politicians worry about spending and results? Why? It's not there money, and they are usually exempt from their own results. The real job of politicians is to get reelected.
