Has or does anyone know a bike route to San Diego from Long Beach because I've been told to take the I5 but I think that is illegal. If anyone knows and answers that would be great

I haven't done it, but I worked with a guy that did it several time.
He talked about parking at the AmTrak station in Long beach, and heading down PCH to San Diego.
Then catch AmTrak back up to get you car.

I-5 would suck, and be Illeagal.

I have never done it, so I don't know how wide the bike lane on PCH would be all the way down.

I doubt that it's legal to ride a bicycle on the I-5. However, I have seen cyclists on the I-5 South past Oceanside on more than one occasion. Even if it were legal, the traffic can get so bad especially in Orange County where the I-5 widens that it could prove deadly!

Ok, here's the beta. From Long Beach just follow PCH down to San Clemente. At the southern end of town, on the west side of the freeway, is a foot/bikepath that drops down to old the old hwy (closed to traffic). Follow that until you come to the end where it will again spit you out onto a freeway frontage road, just north of the power plant. Ride south on that road, passing the power plant. Just after the power plant you will hit the entrance to a state campground. This is just above the beach area on a bluff. Ride thru the campground until you hit it's end. There will be a gate with a bike access thru it. Follow this south, passing under a narrow tunnel under the freeway. This will end at the road Las Pulgas. From there you have to ride on the freeway, which is legal, from this point down to Oceanside. It's quite unnevering due to the high speeds that people normally drive thru there at and emergency lane debris. But due to the closure of Camp Pendelton to cyclists, it forced the riding of I5, so it is legal to do so. You exit at Oceanside Harbor. When you get off at Oceanside, turn left and follow this road for a couple of lights until you can turn right and drop down to the beach itself. This gets you off the main drag thru Oceanside, which is not cycling friendly at all. Once you hit the beach turn left and continue on South. This parallels the beach thru neighborhoods and is a better way to go thru O-side. Near the end of this street, there is a stop sign you turn left at, signs point back to I5 at this point..turn left, go over the RR tracks and turn right at the first street past the tracks. Follow this until you can't go any farther and turn left and you will then hit PCH that will take you down thru Carlsbad, Encinitas etc.

Hope this helps

Try the above link for something you might want to try next year, the Orange County Wheelmen's Amtrak Century, Long Beach to San Diego. It's all filled up for this year though.

If the like does not work, go to www.ocw.org and click on the link to Amtrak Century.
