Hey guys, I'm back with another newbie question.

I thought it would be fun and interesting to lube my threaded headset so I took it all apart, lubed it, and put it back together. Now I have a problem. It is really tight!

I am pretty sure I but it back together properly. I put the races in the tube and pushed them down so that there is no gap between them and the tube. Then I put the bottom bearing (bearings facing down and the retainer facing up) on the fork and slipped it in the headtube. I then up the top bearing on top of the fork (bearings facing down and the retainer facing up) and screwed down the adjustable race. I got it tight enough that it would hold everything in but not so tight that it would bind.I then put the retainer washer on and then the top nut on top of it all.

Things feel secure but it seems too tight. My handlebars won't spin freely if I tip the bike one way. But if I loosen things up the adjustable race will start turing the top nut and thhings will either loosen or tighten depending on the direction it is turned.

I am sure I am making some newbie mistake. I have searched old threads and didn't find anything and I also looked at the Barnett's manual without any help. It seemed to work fine before I took it apart. Any suggestions? Thanks. I am happy to get pics for anyone that thinks they would be of help.

The top nut is used as a lock nut for the adjustable race. You need to first adjust the race so the fork moves freely but with no play. Once done, you hold the race with one wrench and tighten the nut down being careful that the race does not turn and change the adjustment.

A headset may also bind if a bearing set is installed upside down so the retainer is rubbing.
