Can anyone recall the details about why Cipollini and Ullrich both decided not to race the 2003 Worlds in Hamilton? I'm doing some research, and can't find any information anywhere.

I was actually living in Hamilton at the time and enjoyed the championships immensely, but was not yet a fan of cycling per se, so I didn't know any of the riders or follow the news about them.

Thanks,
R

To concentrate solely on the 2003 TDF.

Just in case anyone is following this thread, I've finally come up with a source for why Cipollini didn't race in 2003:

As many expected, Mario Cipollini will not be taking part in the 2003 World Road Champions in Hamilton. The reigining World Champion officially announced his decision during a press conference he gave this morning in Milan.

This news comes as no surprise as the "Lion King", winner of the past edition in Zolder with a stellar sprint, has not been racing a "real" competition for more than four months, after a the dramatic crash caused by a Kelme rider forced him out of the Giro on May 21st.
