and came out ok, I guess. I went for 148 km over the North Chicago River Branch trail (three times). The good news is that I pretty much caught and passed everyone up I saw up on the horizon and was only passed by two riders. The bad news is that my time was over 6.5 hours!! What a totally crappy time (22-24 km/hour). The trails were winding in many places, and I did slow down a tad because of that.

I took a 2 liter camelback, 2 cliff bars, and two bottles full of gatorade; using up all the full allotment. Before I started, I ate two packets of oatmeal, a bannana, and a small bowl of cereal, with water and cofee.

I only stopped for the lights and traffic (i.e., when I had to for safety sake). I was tired afterwards, but generally recuperated fairly well within a couple of hours. I don't feel like bonked, although my "speed", such as it was, was a tad slower on the final 3rd (2-4 km/hr); I also used a slightly smaller gear. I also noticed that towards the end, I was welcoming the stoplights, so I could give a respite to my lower back, which began to hurt (not too bad); in general, though, my legs and lungs were ok; the only discomfort was the lower back after about three-four hours of riding...

I'm new to cycling; my fitness is improving (I used to be able to run 3:40 marathons 5 years ago, but then my weight balooned to 230; it's down to 205 at present and I hope to get it back down to 170-180 with some more sustained training--I"m 6.2, by the way).

In any event, can any body provide me some feedback on my ride, based on what I've said? Is there something I should have done that I didn't do?? Should I be worried about the lower back discomfort?? Is it feesible to imagine doing a century in 5 hours (I would need to improve by over 30%!

Thanks

I think you did great. Where do YOU think you need to improve? Cuz it sounds like you're on the right track to me. Granted, my two recent centuries were a bit slower than your pace, so I can't say ya did anything wrong.

When did your back start hurting? I should think if it was after 70 miles, that's fine. I personally wouldn't carry a camelbak, but that's just me.

Are you stretching in the saddle or atleast stopping to stretch periodically?

Congrats!

oh, forgot to mention, go for a really easy spin today and/or tomorrow. Get the blood and nutrients back into your muscles.

Thanks for the feedback! I would say my back started hurting in the final 40 km or so. Quick question: by "spinning", I presume that you mean something like a slow, relaxing, cmfortable ride at a very small gear???

Sorry if I'm not up on the terminology...

well, call it what you want, but just go for an easy hour ride (15kph?). Get the legs moving with low effort to pump the good stuff in and the bad stuff out of your muscles. Go to a local park, look at the beautiful people :D

I think you know intuitively if your back hurt cuz your bike's fit needs adjusting or whether you were just pushing yourself. Is this your first long ride? You might need a better saddle. A better fit. Or you just might need time to get used to it all.

Sounds like you did well. I did my first 100 mile race/ride on Saturday.

My only advise would be to make sure your bike is fitted correctly to you, (seat, stem, and frame)this can make a huge difference in your long distance comfort. I used to experience lower back pain and through fitment and stretching I no longer experience it.

I would not be too concerned with your time on your first one. Just think of it as a training goal, anything is possible you just have to work your ass of to get there.

A little off topic... how did you get the mileage in? I mean, if you start from either end (Botanic Garden parking lot or Devon and Caldwell) and go to the the opposite end, it's like 16 miles. So the round trip is about 32 miles. I know they say the trail is 20 miles, which would make your trip mileage more feasible, so can you let me know where the rest of the trail is? I keep looking for it, but dang it, I can't find the rest of it, no matter how many times I stare at that map!

Thanks for the heads up in advance!
