I have the opportunity to get a new 2001 Specialized Allez elite for $830. This is about half the price it went for last year. My issue is I plan on riding on average 25-50 miles a session, with some longer thrown in. No racing. I know this is an aluminum frame w/carbon fork. It felt good on the test spin but I'm from a steel background so worried about using alum for long rides.

Also this bike uses the "compact geometry" as opposed to the traditional straigt top tube. What do people think of this? When I first saw it thought it looked like a ladies' bike. The area I live in has rolling hills, and the Appalachian mountains are too far from me. Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to BikeForums.

I have done several metric centuries and long group rides (35-50 miles) on my "old" aluminum bike. It is now my commuter that I ride 30 miles a day. Never had any problems.

I think a lot of the "perceived" differences between the ride on steel and aluminum is based on preference.

If the bike fits, and is comfortable, go for it.
I don't think the difference between Al and Steel will be
that noticable.
I used to commute in the Arlington/Falls Church area, and while
its not the appalachians there are some really good hills.
I love them rollin hills.....:D they just keep on going and going
(mostly uphill).

I rode over 4000km across Australia on an aluminium frame. No problem.
