Winter Cycling - Post a picture of yourself in winter outfit

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Want to see how you guys prepare for the winter riding. Feel free to post a pic of how/what you wear when you go outside and ride. :thumb:

That's the one I post all the time, arriving at work one Saturday morning in March '08. Pretty warm that day, around -3°C I think.
Since then, I found nicer, windproof tights, and I use a cycling-specific jacket. That one is visible all right, but the flapping in the breeze over around 15 mph drove me nuts.

Dec 08, the Santa Hat Ride. Yes, those Santa hats fit over helmets. We throw money into a paper bag and drop it off at a children's shelter. This year's Santa Hat Ride was tonight. I missed it due to work.

The avatar shot from Feb 08 I think. It was about -5°C that day, roads were clear and dry and I was tired of wearing hi-viz and riding the studs. Took the roadie out for a spin. That's from a hilltop at the highest point in the city, downtown looming in the background. Oh, and that's my BikeForums.Net Great Lakes Forum Jersey.
Does anyone wear shorts (cycling shorts, not baggy) over their tights actually? Something like this...............

Uh, no. Doesn't that just duct cold air right up to the boys?
Oh, wait. Not baggy? Still no. The chamois goes next to the skin. I wear unpadded tights. Saves on laundering them which helps the water-resistance last longer between applications.
I saw a photo recently of one of the Pro Tour guys wearing his shorts on the outside over tights. I guess they don't have to worry about laundry, and they have to keep all the sponsor's logos showing in order to get the check every month. Still, the thought of the chamois being a layer or two away, or possibly even worse, two of them, just makes me queasy.

Ok, so I only it wore it once. But my Pearl Izumi Amfib bibs remind me a lot of a wet suit and the Performance booties remind me of, well... booties.

I need to start a new thread... What kind of reaction do you get when you walk into a bank? :)

Seriously?
I take off my helmet and remove my sunglasses (if wearing them) outside, and push my bala back and down into the neck gaiter position. Never a problem.

Normal winter kit for me when the temps are below 20 degs. I am wearing a pair of winter cycling shoes but with colder temps it's not enough for me so I have to wear some shoe covers too.

Yes...of course... and I'd probably take off a sweater or two if the line was very long.

Didn't know about the icicles until I got home. Was a decent blizzard and my eyelashes were freezing shut from the outside in.

How cold? I would die with an outfit like that above 0F. I have a pair of Nashbar winter gloves that look like yours. No matter how cold it is outside, they always get soaking wet after a ride... rendering them useless for a return commute, for example.
[Truth in advertising:] my photo above (#5) features a mask that I tend to wear more as a scarf than a mask. On the coldest days, I am constantly pulling it up and down. It does tend to overheat me.

I don't remember, it was a year ago. Must have been warm if it was snowing, usually doesn't snow here below 15F. The wind did plenty to keep me chilled though.
Keep in mind that other than a light windbreaker and ski mittens, that's all wool and doesn't really hold sweat in.

Note the rear-view mirror!
I rarely wear more than two layers. Almost never in fact. A good set of poly fleece pants and a wicking shirt topped by an uninsulated rain jacket is sufficient down to 0 f. Below zero I switch to a warmer jacket and thicker pants, but I still generate enough body heat to stay toasty. My eyeball did freeze shut one time, otherwise I haven't been injured by the cold. I'm built like a marine mammal. I love the cold!
Ooh sounds like fun. I had a co-worker take a pic before leaving yesterday for this thread :)

First winter riding and I have little cycling-specific gear. I have a skullcap under my helmet, safety glasses, a Columbia jacket with pitzips, denim jeans, and Xmart gloves & boots. My next purchase I hope to be some padded shorts that I can wear under my clothes (you gotta start somewhere). Gotta love the reflective piping on my pannier.

This list seems a bit light unless you are travelling only a mile or so. For the upper section, I'd recommend a base shirt (like you list...), good wool sweater and a windbreaker jacket or some sort. If it gets colder than 20F, maybe another sweater.
But, as soon as I say this, 10 posters will come to your rescue claiming I am over-dressing. :)

haha! don't let my bf hear that!
notice i mentioned *on this day*
I hadn't gotten my thermal jersey in yet, nor my windvest...i only went a couple miles before i couldn't breathe from the cold.
Since then I've bought a facemask, a wind vest is on it's way, and I have a thermal jersey and another pair of thermal tights, this time padded.
Don't have time to ride the next couple days, but maybe friday if i'm lucky.
Yak, are you guys running studded tires there?
I was the only one with spikes on that day, and there was about 3 " of fresh over bare ground. We're mainly off-road riders in the winter, so unless there's a thaw/refreeze, you can get by without them.

Got sick of the grind at the 'athletic club' for winter exercise. I've been on my FS mountain bike in the snow and it's fun but the suspension seems to make for a lot of extra effort. I can ride Fri-Sat-Sun on the Pugsley, do some weights and jacuzzi on Mon and Wed.
Not you...but as a rule, I'm good with cute gals under dressing. :D
Based on that second photo of you above, I'd recommend a full-face balaclava...

Don't rule out throwing on a pair of baggy wind pants. Nice to have when there's a good breeze... although it does look awful.
