Training & Nutrition - How many Base miles do you rack up?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The last Month I've ridden once or Twice a week giving my body a bit of a break

I plan on starting base Jan 4th and doing it till the end of March.. so 12 weeks

first race is in late May or early June (no schedules out yet so based on last years)

I race MTB in the sport class but train the majority of time on my road bike since it's easier to control factors

I trained 250 hours this year and will bump it to 275 this season.... using the 10% rule

so what is a decent number or miles for a solid base to build off ?

Two questions. 1) If you're basing your training on hours, why are you limiting base by milage? 2) How can you know the total number of hours you'll train for the year without knowing how much time you'll spend on base?

Wouldn't the better questions be how much time do you have to train between 1/4 and 3/31 and how should that training time be allocated, e.g., weekly distributions of time and intensity?

well at 275 hours a week that's and average of 5.28 hours a week ... obviously some week will be more some will be less depending on up coming races

I already know how much time i'll be training... based on Trianingpeaks software and my limiters

I was looking to see what people racing in similar categories are racking up for miles 1k, 1500, 2k, etc

So would you increase your training time or training speed if I told you I put in 4300 miles of base training (20 hours/week @ 18 mph avg. for 12 weeks)? Design the best training plan for you given your goals and available training time. I don't see how what other people do can be relevant.

I understand what your getting at

would you be happier if the question was how many hours do you train a week? and what Category do you race?

If you need validation for your training, you should look to performance testing not what other people are doing. Especially when there's no way to tell how well what they do is working.

so what is a decent number or miles for a solid base to build off ?I don't think the 10% rule applies over the course of a year. Otherwise, it would take years to get up to 500 hrs/yr when in reality it's not that hard to start off at 500 hrs/yr.

I would aim for 10-15 hrs/wk.

this

and there is a thread in the racing forum that may help
What does YOUR base training look like? (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?610738-What-does-YOUR-base-training-look-like)

Thanks guys

I started with a very low volume due to coming off of an IT band issue which does still rear it's ugly head on rides over 100km
