There is a new ride posted from Kitty Hawk to Corolla.
Read it first then come on down and ride it. We love visitors.

It's been a long time since I was at the Outer Banks. I hear the number of vacationers has skyrocketed. With just one two lane highway on the island running North-South, what's traffic like these days?

sigh. I was going to go to the OBX last weekend - to ride from Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke (app. 40 miles) but Hurricane Alex got there first. Sand all over the road :( . Maybe this weekend.

Route 12 is, for the most part, extremely well-shouldered and bike-friendly. There are also extensive bike/ped trails near Corolla (I don't like to use them because of the dangers, which seem much more than just facing vehicular traffic!)

I would say the worst times to bike would be Saturdays morning and afternoons) as that is of course 'check out day/check in day' for the house renters.

BTW - Quick question. The ride I want to do (Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke) is basically north>south. Don't want to spend entire ride into a headwind. What are the prevailing winds at the OBX usually. Do they shift a lot and you just take your chances? Is it easier going south>north? Should I just keep an eye on the weather (fronts, etc.)?

You will most likely face a headwind, or at least a southeastern off your port bow.

My understanding from various reading is that the winds can be expected to change in mid-to-late September. Does that seem true? I'm planning an NYC-to-FLA trip around then... would like to avoid thousands of miles of headwinds!

Thanks!
