Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Now I understand

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Apologies if this has been posted before.

i think it's because there are more bike thefts in NYC then anywhere else in the country.

True, but is it simply because there are more people in NYC or because the people there don't care about bike thieves?
I thought it was amazing that the police van in the video told the guy to shut off his camera rather than go after the guy smashing the lock with the hammer and chisel.
Thing is, the lock was a crappy chain with a simple padlock. It wasn't as if it were a kyptonite or a u-lock.
However, I was surprised that nobody said anything or looked. Two things that may have contributed to that - one is the presence of the camera, not all the time but there was that one, I think the third time he did it, where the camera was pretty close.
The other thing is that if you look like you have every right to be there - nobody will question you/care. I think most people who saw him probably assumed that it was his bike and that he had lost his key, etc. because who would steal a bike in broad daylight right? That's also the scary part about that.

all the more reason to lock your bike INSIDE THE BUILDING YOUR IN. i wish noncyclists could understand that a bike is not going to leak gas and the tires have been the same places their shoes have and 23mm tires dirty a much smaller area than a 180lb person with size 12 shoes. u-locks are for beating people that try to steal your bikes. sorry about my previous post, i couldn't see the clip because i'm at work and the computer is too slow. i didn't quite understand the post. my mistake.
my friend jason made a great point...
why do cyclists have to spend 1/5 (I am being very generous) of the price of their vehicle to protect it?
if there was an epidemic in new york where it was guaranteed that if you bought a car that costs $500 or more it would get stolen (or at least parts stolen off of it) if it is parked on the street, do you think the police would be so lax about stopping such epidemic?
it's friggin' ridiculous.
why don't we invent a "LoJack" for bikes?
http://www.lojack.com/
it would be super small and I would actually be willing to pay 1/5 of the price of my bike for it... as I am sure you would too.
"who would steal a bike in broad daylight right?"
about 2/3 the thieves in NYC.
You ever see that news article on jay leno where this town was reporting their police activity?
10:41 PM: Police help clip lock for boy who lost the key to his bicycle.
10:55 PM: Bicycle reported stolen.

That's the point and the scary part. A few years back, my one week old bike got stolen right in front of where I work during lunch hour with a security guard in view.
