Oh boy, Apple rumor sites. Because there needed to be a peg below the National Enquirer on the Reliability Scale.

I haven't a clue if there's actually a tablet soon to spring forth from Cupertino's loins, but were there a tablet for every time an Apple rumor site said one was coming, uhh... there'd be a lot of tablets.

Apple Insider is accurate much of the time. It's all speculation. We'll find out soon enough.

P.S. the new MacBook Pros have a battery life of 6-7 hours by virtue of the greater capacity battery possible by the non-user-removable design. Replacing the battery when it wears out takes 20 mins at one of the 250+ Apple stores (and they'll add 50+ each year going forward) worldwide. Every 1.5-2 years. Oh no, what a massive inconvenience.

You pinhead.

Don't you have to buy a contract worth over 2 grand with a company that has one of the worst satisfaction ratings to get one of those gizmos? If memory serves me right, you have to buy a 3G contract even if you don't have 3G in your area.

I thought about getting the iphone, but after playing with them for a number of hours, I decided that keyboards and scroll wheels are handy things on devices if you actually browse or type that much.

I could have possibly overlooked even those shortcomings, except being forced to lock in with a crap company that charged way more than the competition really is a deal buster in my book. I can use my phone to tether my laptop without getting in trouble.

We regularly hire people who identify themselves as being Mac people since they really do think different. Fortunately, we have a training program to bring them up to speed. We explain that you point at the icon that looks like the program you want to use and that if you want text to appear on the screen, you should press the corresponding buttons on the keyboard in front. They are instructed not to be distracted by keyboards or mice that make ergonomic sense. Once they've been introduced to those crazy concepts, they do fine.

Apple battery life is decent, but there are plenty of other thin devices with decent battery life that are also user serviceable. Then you have to pay a premium to have service foisted upon you and vendor lock in while you enjoy a cheapo chicklet keyboard design that was abandoned by most manufacturers in the 80's.

I began following the Apple story closely way back in 1982. I believe that was the year USA Today began publishing, and they frequently covered "high tech" stories in detail. My then daily ritual before work: coffee and a muffin at Dunkin Donuts while reading USA Today. I confess the sports section was my favorite section.

I even have a picture of me standing outside Apple's corporate headquarters in Cupertino.

I've owned and or used both Apple and PC computers over the years. No difference as far as the end product goes. Nowadays, Disneyland excites me far more than computers and gadgets.

If I got a ModBook or iPad, I'd likely primarily run WindowsXP on it.

While I have seen some Windows PCs that suck, many were made to suck as a result of user error.

Is 'user error' the inability to diagnose and track down a computer that won't hook up to a wireless network? When my Dell started doing this I had to call:

• Dell

• Microsoft

• Linksys (third party mfr of the network card)

Half the tech support people I spoke to were in India. None of them helped me. All of them pointed fingers at the other companies. I threw up my hands and tossed the Dell, we didn't need it anymore at that point. I suspect all it was was a bad network card, but I didn't really care at that point. This took hours and hours. It was pretty stupid.

And therein lies the great Windows Achilles Heel, which is rather ironic, since the open nature of the Windows/PC model is one of its greatest strengths in many respects. But it can make it a real bear to diagnose problems, where with Apple, you call them up and it's mostly all on them (hardware, software, network cards, etc), so it's easier to get to the bottom of the issue. They also tend to have better tech support, and it tends to all be people in the US and Canada, which helps too.

I run a small office with three desktops and a couple of laptops on a network. I don't have IT people here. I'm the technician. So I just want this stuff to work, and when it doesn't, it's a massive pain in my ass, it costs me time and money, and it drives me crazy. 'User error?' Please. Your biggest error as a user is choosing a computer system that doesn't work and then requires you to pull your hair out trying to get it running again. Whether some computer geek thinks I'm a clueless Computer Fred is utterly irrelevant to me. I'm not interested in computer stuff. I use them to do my work, and if that starts getting too difficult, I'll move on. I've been using Macs in the business since 1991 and the only computer I've ever given up the ghost on was a Windows XP Dell.

Newsflash to the computer geeks: the only people who are impressed with your technical wizardry are nerdier than you are.

That's a bummer, bro. Seems like a bit of a stretch to go from that to your blanket statement: Windows PCs suck. I will concur that Dells and HP/Compaqs typically suck in one way or another.

Glad you found a vendor that works for you. Considering your admitted lack of computer knowledge, it seems you're only truly qualified to comment on Customer Service, not Hardware or OS quality.

When I have to call tech support, I end up wanting to beat them with tire irons before the call is through. The reason is that I know a heck of a lot more than them, but they still can't move forward until I do every stupid step which they mumble the instructions (which they don't even understand) which I have already done BEFORE calling them. Until then, they won't even check their own systems.

Lots of rumors, all over the map. I tend to believe there will be 7" and/or 10" LCD touchscreen devices and the price point will be $600 or so. Whether you'll have to purchase this gizmo through a cellular carrier is a good question, but my guess is that you'll be able to buy it, use it WiFi only and tether it to a 3G/4G carrier later if you want to pay for that service.

As for my blanket condemnation of Windows, it's partly tongue in cheek, but partly based on so many friends/associates/relatives who have had negative Windows experiences and later switched to Mac and have been happy ever since. Anecdotal perhaps, but to a preposterously redundant degree. And of course Windows Vista was the ultimate clusterfark. The two computers I used that had it were friggin paperweights they were so slow and useless. Windows 7 does appear to be what they should have come out with 2-3 years ago to replace XP in the first place. How MS manages to do some of what it does is hard to fathom.

As much as the idea of the baby Bells duking it out (ATT, VZ), ATT would probably be the carrier that gets it.

The reason I think that is based upon my first trip to an Apple store last week. Lots of shiny gizmos that are designed to play well with each other: MeWeb, Apple TV, the ability to use your Mac to find your lost (or stolen) iPhone/iTouch and then lock or disable the device remotely...

It would literally upset the Apple cart if the iPad was exclusive to any other carrier other than whichever carrier is supporting the iPhone.

And while I'm attempting to sound like I know what I'm talking about (I don't, see my sig line :)), I'm kinda curious if anyone at Apple has ever thought about launching their own telecom company. Don't know what the intial investment would be, but it sorta makes sense given Apple's overall structure.

If I understand right, the major mobile carriers don't actually own their own infrastructure, they lease it. What's to keep Apple from doing the same?

If it can be hooked up to Clear's version of 4G (a wireless geek friend says Clear's wimax doesn't meet proper 4G standards for whatever reason), I'm getting one for sure.

Even if it can't work with Clear and still draws well (in Corel Draw or Illustrator), and costs around $600, I'll probably get one.
