Greetings,

I have a choice of buying a new (closeout) 2000 trek 5500 (Dura-Ace) or a new 2004 trek 5200 (Ultegra) for the same price. Any advice on which group will perform better?

I am steering towards the durace but want to make sure the newer Ultegra isn't better then the old Dura-Ace

Thanks,
Marc

as far as i know, 9 speed dura-ace 7700 was introduced for model year 1997 and has remained unchanged until 2004, when it was entirely revamped and upgraded to 10 speed, model 7800.

04 ultegra is 9 speed and a decent group in and of itself, but the dura-ace is higher up the food chain.

now, if the 04 5200 is a better frame than the 00 5500, i don't know, but if we're talking two carbon framesets here, it may be worth getting the newer one. perhaps someone else will advise.

Tough choice. The 5200 has the newer and supposedly better and lighter fork. But since the DA and the Ultegra are from the same generation and unused, the DA is the choice there. One other thought is resale value. Even if you only ride the 5500 for a couple of months and decide to sell it, it won't hold its value (because of its age) relative to the newer 5200.

Good choices though - have fun.
