Mountain Biking - Want to replace fork on 97 Marin; cheap!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Started road biking recently, but that has renewed my interest in mtn biking. Would like to revive my mtn bike to ridable condition because no money left for new mtn bike.

It's a 97 Marin Juniper Trail with an excellent condition Manitou SX fork; but the elastomers are too spongy and they are no longer supporting this fork or offering elastomer replacements. I think it's 1-1/8".

So, you can see, any technology 97-forward will likely suit my purpose. Lots of possibilities here - buy/trade forks probably. Preferably NO elastomers, and excellent condition. Perhaps someone out there has a gently used 98 or 99 fork that has seriously depreciated due to age, but is in top condition (like mine).

Or maybe I can find a lower end new fork that performs at least as well as my fork did new.

Suggestions? See pic:

Oh, BTW, I realize there is a general-info sticky above on forks; but this is a pretty open ended thread. I could just as easily take offers for sale as I could offers for trade; or I could take some specific advice on a comparable brand/model. Maybe someone is in a good position to help my particular needs.

The SX is a sickeningly light fork... I wouldn't be so quick to ditch it... and I hate most Manipoo products. If you do get another fork maybe consider the Noleen air fork you see on ebay for $120 or so. It can be set for 73mm of travel which shouldn't mess up your bike's headtube angle much. Forks are generally longer travel these days and therefore can affect your handling.

Thanks, Seely.

If anyone knows a source for "vintage" SX elastomers, I'd be mighty grateful. Particularly if that source has the stiffer elastomers, as I think mine were just too soft to begin with, despite their age.

If I could get a few sets of these rubber bumpers I'd extend the life of the fork with minimal expense....

I had a set of stock ones for the SX-Ti I owned several years ago. I dug them out of the bin, and found they had deteriorated from the heat, so I tossed them.

Good Luck.

I suggest you get into a form letter email campagne and blast all the mail order shops to see if anyone has some in a parts box somewhere.
