Commuting - Onguard brute for $20 from amazon

This could be old or useless news, but the old version of the onguard brute is currently $19.32 at amazon. http://bit.ly/6ieQGP This version of the lock came in second on slate's bike lock test and first on maxim's. It brings up the question, should one get the bulldog mini DT http://bit.ly/4H16jg or this brute and the akita http://bit.ly/5K6f3M , both are ~$25.

I have a Bulldog Mini, and never use it. Seems like a great little lock, not too heavy, etc... But it's so small, I can never seem to find anything I can lock to.

I had the Onguard Brute but it was to heavy for me. I went with with Onguard Mini 7 instead. I'm sure the Brute offered greater protection, but I figured if someone came along with a power tool it wouldn't matter if it took 1 or 2 extra minutes to cut through. The Mini 7 is a lot lighter and I use it a lot more. I guess if you were in a high crime rate and weight didn't matter i'd go with the Brute. I think the Mini 7 is enough of a deterrent for most crimes in my area.

Yeah, I mean certainly neither will hold up to power tools, but my thought is always that they will look at the brute and go "Sheesh that lock is big! I am going to go for this slightly smaller one instead". It's debatable whether that's worth the extra 2 lbs. Either way it's only 1/2 as heavy as the really big kryptonite or onguard chains.

What is the difference between the old and new style?

I have essentially the same lock; mine is a Magnum 3000 (http://www.magnum.ws/Magnum/3000.htm) but the parent company, Magnum Industries (http://www.magnum.ws/), makes locks for Magnum, OnGuard, Lox, Metalok, and also Torch brand bike lights. It's a great lock - heavy, yes, but solid. I carry it on my rack and therefore the weight is a non-issue. I prefer the long shackle to reach around the wheel, frame, and post that I'm locking it to. No disrespect to Sheldon - I just feel more secure that way.

I think the old one had problems with the key jamming.... and I don't know if it had the sliding dust cover kind of thing. Not sure though.

I like the Mini 7 because of the yellow and black theme. It kind of draws attention to the fact that it is a lock and not part of the bike. Just know the relative crime rate in your area. I thought the biggest baddest lock (in my price range) would be the best; atleast until I had to lug it around. Even on my rack (strapped on top or on the sides) I could feel the weight and didn't like it. I guess in the end the best lock you got, is the lock you use.

Wow. Sure is. Glad I pulled the trigger when I did. Amazon's pricing is just plain strange.

Just got mine today. Man it's huge. And heavy. Mine is the new style too, and I'm very happy with the purchase. The weight won't bother me for running errands and such - I'll just throw it in my grocery pannier, and it should be cool. Or maybe find a way to attach it to my rack.

If you only run the one pannier you can drop it in your rack like I did in the pic above (reply #8). It shouldn't bounce out but you may want to strap it down as illustrated to stop it from making a racket.

I have a Delta Megarack on my Felt, and neither the Brute or my Bulldog Mini will fit in that slot. I also have a Zefal rack in the garage that I intent to put on some bike, probably the FX. Both locks fit in that slot on that one. However, the supports look different, and I'll have to make sure it won't interfere with the spinning of the wheels.

Great idea though, if I have a rack that will work, because I do only have the one pannier most of the time.

The name stamped on it is Damco, but I believe that it's a knockoff of this rack by Axiom:

I got 2 on sale when Colin first posted this. They came a couple of days ago. My wife flat out refused to use it--she says it's too heavy. :(
