Introductions - Hello and Bike Help Needed from Houston

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello All: I am hoping to buy a bike soon and need some info on what to purchase.

Some background – I have owned two bikes in the past however they have both been cheep used hand me down heavy “mountain bikes” ( I put that in quotes because I don’t know that they were really mountain bikes). With these bikes I did a mixture of trail riding and urban riding (day long rides through Houston). I know nothing of bike brands, bike technology, or really bike anything; I just know that I used to have a BLAST riding my old POS’s and I’m ready to buy a new bike.

I’m looking for a bike that I can use for short transportation yet take on long rough rides through the city, and also take it off the cement and down some dirt hills if I want. I know that’s allot to ask of a bike but I’m sure there has to be something. I’m not sure which sub-forum to put my request in so Ill just drop it here and maybe someone can direct me to the right forum or even suggest some bike manufactures I can check out.

Oh yeah I hope to spend under 500.00 dollars on said bike.

Thanks

neilp

Hi,
I'm in the Houston area also. There are many good bike shops in Houston, including some used bike shops. But if you want to visit one of the most unique and knowledgeable shops in town then stop by Boone's cycles on Crawford near Hermann Park (zoo, museums, etc.). Jeff and the others will be very helpful. They have a website www.danielboonecycles.com you might want to check out. Good luck in your search.

maybe you want a mountain Bike but with some streetable high pressure tires . I have ridden an old panasonic road bike sucesfully off road with 27X1.25 tires.Lots of bike will work to some extent off road.Or you might want to buy a mountain bike and an extra set of wheels and tires for when you want to go on the street. Of course if you do this check out nashbar for the parts.Just a suggestion for what it is worth. This works best if you are handy with tools.

Check out the Giant Sedona. A little bit mountain and a little bit road. It's a hybrid in your price range.
