Hi,

I want to get a light weight bike, what does carbon stays mean, is that mean bike has carbon fiber frame? or is it just a part of the frame that is carbon fiber?

From what I've gathered on this forum, 'stays' refers to the chainstays, the rear triangle of the bike.

The stays are the tubes that go from the seat tube to the rear wheel . The top are seatstays and the bottom are chainstays . Most builders that offer carbon stays , only use carbon seatstays , while others will build a frame making both of them out of carbon .

The chainstays (from bottom bracket to rear dropout) and seatstays (from top of seat tube to rear dropout) are sometimes made from carbon fiber to isolate the rear of the frame from road vibration.

For a frame-builder, if they buy in a complete carbon rear triangle as a single moulded unit, they can build up the front-end in a variety of sizes, without having the expense of a carbon mould. Its a cheap way to "carbonize" their product line, speed up the fabrication process, and produce a good bike.
