If there is friction there is wear. Fastidious cleaning helps by reducing the grit contribution, but wear is inevitable.
As to rim life span, YMWV. Longer than chain wheels for road riding, shorter than the headset or frame.
yes, they do wear rims, depending on conditions.
i run them year round.
they are much friendlier to rims than shimano pads, IME

If you are worrying about rim wear, then you live where it rains. If so, the only thing to have are the Mavic Open Pro Ceramic rims. They simply don't wear, IME. You have to build them yourself or have them built. Never seen built wheels for sale.
But yes, salmon pads are better. But no, they still wear your rims. Ceramic rims need ceramic pads. Lots of people wear out regular Open Pros in one season, salmon pads or no. Depends on your mileage. They used to last me a couple seasons, then I got ceramics.
