This chainring is a non ramped/non pinned 56t engagement ring. I just mounted it on the crank without giving it any thought, now I'm thinking - is there a right way and a wrong way to do this.

Check the chainring bolt holes for countersink as well, in which case there is a right way to mount it.

It looks backward to me. Just by the design cut in it though.

The teeth are normally recessed on the outside and flat on the inside of the outter ring, I think.

Normally, outer rings are mounted so the maker's logo and and tooth count numbers face out.

Yup, that's what I thought when I looked at it, but wasn't sure. I'll take these suggestions into consideration, and probably change it for peace of mind.

Well, I think you mounted an "outer" ring on the inside of the spider. The countersinks on the bolt holes are probably "right", but the spiral cut is facing the "wrong" way. If you flipped it over, it'll look better. It won't make any difference to its function.

If the holes on the outer ring are recessed towards you as you stand, looking, on the drive-side of the bike - that's where the bolts go. The ones with the Allen-Head screws (hex - bolts). The inner should be un-recessed and accept the bolt. If they are the same - it doesn't matter. Usually.
Unless a Chimp with a power-tool did the work.
