Bicycle Mechanics - Campy freehub pawl spring failure

I was replacing a Campy freehub on a Campy wheelset with a Fulcrum Shimano-compatible freehub and the pawl spring got caught somehow and pulled out.

It's a small bit of spring wire that wraps around the freehub, forcing the three pawls to pop out. At least before it got snagged and bent, that's what it did.

Does anyone know if this part (http://www.ebikestop.com/campy_and_fulcrum_freehub_pawl_spring-FW9831.php?cat=574) is the replacement?

Or do I have to buy another freehub?

Here's the relevant section from the Campagnolo spare parts PDF. The spring is listed as "5-FH-RE114" only because it usually comes from the factory in a five-pack. The ebikestop price is a bit steep (5-packs are about $5) but it's a small price to pay for the convenience if you only need one.

BTW, if you're changing freehubs or doing maintenance on Campagnolo wheels often, you may want to consider the factory pawl assembly tool (UT-HU090) (http://branfordbike.com/product/campagnolo-pawl-assembly-tool-ut-hu090-914.htm). A few dollars provide for an extra bit of convenience, including mitigating events like what you've experienced.

Yep, that's exactly it.

I moved the spring from the Campy-compatible hub to the Shimano compatible hub so I've got a working wheel for my build now, and I'll get a replacement spring for the Campy-compatible hub.

And thanks for the suggestion on that tool. I was wondering what I'd do if there were something like 6 or 8 pawls in the freehub. Since there's only three in the hubs I have, I can handle that without the tool, for now, anyway.

You don't need a tool for the spring, it's only 3 pawls.


The "spring" is available as a spare part from any dealer. We do this repair semi-frequently when people bring in freehubs with corroded pawls
