If anyone is interested, I will be riding Azusa Canyon to East Fork to GMR, down GMR and back home. It looks like our meeting spot will be Goddard Middle School in Glendora at 7:30 am on 1-02-2010.
I will be riding a Cervelo Soloist.
I've never ridden this way before. I hope its fun!

To follow up. This was a great ride. I started out at Goddard and headed to Azusa Canyon. From Goddard to the Base of Azusa the ride was a mix of rolling hills and flats. After the base of Azusa you gently start heading upward and to East Fork its about 13 miles. From Azusa to East Fork there are some good climbs and some moderate descents. Heading into the canyon there was a strong head wind that made the ride interesting. There was more car traffic on Zausa than I would have liked.
Once I got to East Fork, vehicle traffice dissappeared and it was 6 more miles to GMR. Of the ride East Fork to GMR was the hardest. I think East Fork to GMR is harder than starting at Sierra Madre/GMR and going up GMR to Maint Shed.
Once I got to the top of East Fork, I headed down GMR. The decent was fast and mixed with lots of Motorcycles. I finished this ride with a half loop aound Bonelli Park.
All and all it was an awesome ride!

Glad you enjoyed the ride. When you made the sharp right turn off of the East Fork Rd. you were on GMR We call that portion Little GMR as opposed to Big GMR that comes up from Sierra Madre. I agree that is harder. I usually do that portion after I've been up hwy 39 to AC and Dawson Saddle. Ugh, it's really hard then.:o

My wife, daughter and I were just beginning our long drive up to the Bay Area Saturday morning after visiting our relatives in Azusa. I saw a large group of cyclists at Foothill and Irwindale just after 9:00. Was that a BF group?

Yeah, that last two miles before you get to GMR was hardest for me. It seemed to flatten out but still hard.

Thanks for the ride report.
I've been eying that section and thinking about doing it, but I remembered the motorcyclists being a little thick up there.

On Azusa Canyon car travel was sparse for the most part. There was one very long train of cars at one point, but they passed cautiously. Once on East Fork, traffic disappeared. Maybe it was just a good day. If you do this ride park at Goddard Middle School. I'd like to do this route to Mt Baldy one day.

Most likely the weekly Montrose ride. They pass through that intersection usually around that time heading towards the finish in Sierra Madre.
