Commuting - what do you think of my choice, and will it work.

I am going to upgrade my commuter bike. I ride a giant boulder. I have a lot of good components on it. When. I upgrade this bike, the existing parts are going on a 2009 giant se. I love the frames and they are cheaply priced. I have a Surly Instigator fork, and juicy 3 avid 160mm disc brake on the front. I wanted to put a little bling, bling to the bike. I bought white industries hubs for the wheels. Now, I want to replace the fork with a Ritchey Mountain WCS Carbon Rigid Fork, and replace the disc brake with a Avid Elixir CR Disc Brake 203mm. I know you are going to say, I am crazy for wanting these high end parts. But, I love my bike, and have saved all year for these new parts. This is my late Christmas gift to me. I save my money for traveling, and bike touring. I save money for bike parts. Now with this said, can this combo work:Ritchey Mountain WCS Carbon Rigid Fork, and Avid Elixir CR Disc Brake 203mm. Jenson USA has these parts on sale. I would welcome other suggestions. I don't want to buy a high end bike, I just want to buy the components to replace the old ones. This frame has 7374 miles on it. Most of those miles are touring. So the frame is very comfortable for me.

the upgrades are fine and you should upgrade because like you said you want to add some bling bling. you have saved up money and your worth spending money on. spending money the way are is the same reason why roadies spend +5 grand to get a bike under 15pounds.

myself i couldn't rationalize those upgrade, why get bigger disc breaks, when the smaller ones or even good old rim brakes work just as well. i have different needs and uses for my commute. i would rather put the money away and not use it. or buy a backup bike and keep one good at home for tours and fun rides and a beatup bike to commute with. wrost thing is that you put money down on upgrades and a week later the bike is stolen.

btw bike fames can last more than a hudrade thousand miles, so long as no cracks or major dents devlop. if your really worried about the frame check it over with a flash light or have a bike shop look at it. short of a crash, your frame is probably fine. i see no need for major upgrades or replacments. replace things when they break and keep money in the bank.

There's not a rim brake out there that will match an Avid disc, but a 203 is a bit of overkill, especially hydro. Unless you're a clyde, stay with 160 up front. I roll 185 BB7's on my ride, and I have an FS/AM that carries my 235-240.

If you trust a carbon fork, go for it; I'm looking at the Instigator fork for my upcoming SS build.
