Howzit Guys,

I'm just about starting mountain biking. However my friend tells me that i need Jockey wheels, so to stop the deraluer bounceing around and chain while on stairs....okay.

Can anyone give me some info on these things please?

Jockey Wheels? I am not sure what you mean. Chain Tensioner maybe?

A simple way to stop the chain slap is take out some links. Most people run with 2 or 3 more than they need.

I think hes talking about chain tensioners. Never heard them called Jockey wheels though.

All they do is take up the slack in the chain so that your chain won't bounce around while your riding.

Jockey wheels are the little toothed wheels on your derailleur. Yes they wear out. The way to tell is just by looking at them. If they're worn, replace them. They're not going to greatly improve your shifting, but they will affect it.

Well just anything to stop the chain hitting then frame really, and making the back derailleur stop bouncing alot. So take two or three more links out then yeah?,

Nothing you do will stop the chain slapping. Get a chain stay protector like one of the neoprene ones by Lizard Skinz or make your own out of an old tube and some zip ties. I have a hard plastic one made by Toby Henderson Enterprises (THE) on my Intense.
