Looking for some input from any winter cycling experts out there please. I'm new to winter cycling. I have a Salsa Casseroll fixed gear that I'm considering setting up with a set of Nokian A10's. The Salsa site claims that this frame can take up to 700x32 tires with fenders. According to Peter White's site, the 700x32 A10 actually measures 30.5mm wide & 29mm high. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this or a similar confiuration as my main concern is them working on my ride with the Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. It seems as if it should work, but I'd rather not buy them and then be disappointed with a bad fit. Thanks!!!

They should fit...only one way to find out. ;)
Make sure you post your results for the benefit of others.

If you have a rear rack, you might have to raise it a bit. My Nokian W106x45's are tall. There wasn't quite enough clearance for the rack. I raised it with some cheap plated brackets from the hardware store. Worked like a charm. Nothing like the high snowfall amounts that Buffalo gets to test your new tires. Oh, and in case you haven't already done so, consider replacing rack bolts with the stainless variety. :)

You say you're new to winter cycling - if it was me, I would probably try to fit one of the 35c studded winter tires on the bike, like the Nokian w106's or the Schwalbe Marathon Winter's. I mean, it's better to run A10's than no studs for sure. But I've gotten the impression the A10's are not a very good winter tire, mostly suitable for conditions with absolutely no snow and only occasional ice.

ideally I would look to a tire like the 106, but the Casseroll will not take 35c tires with the PB fenders. 32c is the widest it can take according to Salsa specs

What about without fenders? I'm not suggesting you go completely without but I've got to say that I'm not a fan of the A10s. If the type of snow you get is mostly wet and melts quickly then they might be an OK choice.

If it were me and I could squeeze a 35mm W106 in there and use SKS raceblades (or similar clip-on fender) with a DIY mudflap on the front that's what I would do. Since these fenders don't go under the fork, clearance isn't as much of a problem.

It all depends on you and your commute of course. I know people in this area who don't use studded tires at all and seem to get by just fine. The A10s are certainly better than having no studs and I can verify that they do run small and would most likely fit.

I might try calling or emailing salsa and asking specifically about those tires and fenders. Often different tires and fenders with the same rating are still somewhat different sizes. I feel like the Schwalbe Marathon Winters are smaller than the Nokian 106's. I think the shorter tread makes a difference somehow.

I just measured my 700x35 Nokian 106s with a digital caliper and, at recommended 65 PSIs, they are 33mm at their widest point. I've heard there is some difference based on how wide your rim is, though... I forgot to measure them, but they're Alexrims DC19s.

Which part of the fender clearance worries you? I don't imagine that would be a problem if you went with the A10s. If it turns out to be, I've trimmed similar fenders with a dremel before to get through tight spots.

Where I ran into trouble with the 106s on my old Peugeot was at the brake bridge. The width wasn't a problem, but the height was. In fact I think the 106s give two dimensions on the tire and I tried to get clarification from the LBS as to why that was. They just said they're 35s and to ignore the 37.

The 35mm Marathon Winters would fit on the front of my Peugeot and the !06s wouldn't because they were too tall. They also have, not surprisingly, a deeper tread.

well i"m going with a set of Kenda Klondike 700x35's. I got a good deal on a nearly new set. If they don't work with my Cascadia fenders, I have an old set of fenders I might try to modify to fit, Seems I saw on some site how to cut the fenders to attach on the front and backside of the brake caliper if I run into cramped quarters with them, I'll post some pics when complete. IF anyone has some fender mod links, pass 'em along! Many thanks for all the input
