when i break the chain, am i doing so on the link with the HH label, or the HG?

It doesn't matter. You can separate the chain anywhere. What does matter is that you must push out one of the "ordinary" pins, not the special joining pin, and that you remove that pin completely. Then you must replace it with the special pin or a suitable master link.

so after i push out one of the ordinary pins, i install the master link...does this require me to remove an ordinary pin on each side of the master link?

Your HG chain doesn't have a master link. What Hillie is saying is that you would pop out two adjacent pins on an "outer" link and replace this entire link with a SRAM master link or similar.

If you have an 8 or 9sp. push out two pins and install a Sram masterlink. For a 10 go with the Wipperman or KMC.

Check your chain. New Treks come with a KMC Missing Link on their Shimano ( KMC ) chains.
