Fifty Plus (50+) - Anyone gain weight over the holidays?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Although the official weigh in will be tomorrow morning for me, it appears my weight will be about the same. I was able to get in enough rides to burn off the extra calories from the many delicious meals and leftovers.
It sure seems hard to generate any power riding in the colder temps right now-I bet I could not generate enough power to light a 20 watt lightbulb!! But at least I'm burning sufficient enough calories to maintain!!

Yeah, I figure I picked up a few lbs since Thanksgiving. My jeans are fitting pretty tight... Its a good excuse to get the old bike tuned up and back on the road. I just ordered new tires and tubes from Performance Bike. I can start riding again after I mount them.
Take care.

Hi there, FYI I had avoided all holiday meals from Thanksgiving onwards. Not one time did i cheat or attempt to cheat my regimented weight loss plan since the 15th of August when i weighed in over 235lbs. I am close to being 179lbs for this early monday morning weigh in. My monday morning weigh ins are the most anticipated thing i look forward to each week. All i can say is that if you have discipline and willpower it "CAN BE DONE". When i figure out how to post ful lsize shots i will of the before and after.. its pretty drastic..This all has been done with very limited bike riding due to incliment weather in NW Ohio.

Gained about 5 lbs but kept worse at bay & have already begun reversing it with intervals on the trainer and core workouts. Hope to have it burned off in a month or less - then keep going to be lean & mean for next season. Although it's still considered "overweight" for my 5'-5" height, I'll be happy if I can shed 10 lbs for a weight of 170 lbs by Spring.
Heck, most of the weight will be from my massive quads, right? :)
For the last two years I stayed at 161 lbs. (6 ft). Due to travel, weather and work commitments this fall, I put on 10-15 lbs. Didn't put any more on during the holidays, and plan to take off the extra weight over the first three months of this year. And there is the little matter of the 4 remaining six packs of Great Lakes Brewing Company Christmas Ale...
Increase of 10 lbs since September. It will be gone by March. I enjoy Christmas baking.
Not over the holidays, but throughout the entire year of 2009 I porked up a bit due to laziness. I'm planning to get back to normal over the winter/spring.

No gain...but I rode 200+ miles between Christmas Eve and New Years day...that probably helped.:giver:
I generally gain 5-10 pounds over The Dark Months and lose it when the Sun comes out again.

Losing that 10lbs gets harder every year. :notamused:
I just returned from two weeks in Florida for the holidays and, am 2 lbs heavier than I was two weeks ago when I left to go down there. And, thats with a lot of riding and swimming while there. Otherwise the gain would have been worse. The problem is that I spent time visiting my Aunts and they just kept on cooking. I will be whittling those pounds back off over the next few weeks though.
Funny thing is that I actually felt stronger while riding down there over these two weeks. I guess those extra calories gave me a nice boost even if they did come with the expense of a couple extra pounds.

I spent most of 2009 trying to gain weight. I started at a sickly 145 lbs @ 6 ft. (click the mylifeline link in my sig if you don't know the story) and slowly worked my way up to my 170 lb. goal and right past it. I hit a holiday peak of 185 but have already dropped 4 lbs. by slowing the eating and increasing the riding. I'll use the gym at work to supplement my riding during the winter. After months of struggling to eat anything, focusing on eating as much of anything I could manage to swallow and being rewarded for gaining weight, it is taking some effort to get back to a maintenance level of eating the right things. But I'll do it because I like being thin a lot more than my former 200 lb. heft.

probably, but I'm not getting on the scale until I'm back on the bike

The downhill advantages of increased mass don't outweigh the general disadvantages, do they?

I got on the scale this morning and since Halloween I am up about 4lbs. That is actually way better than I thought it would be to be honest. Over the course of 2009 I lost about 36lbs and I was hoping to keep the holiday bloat to 10lbs or less. It has been pretty cold around here lately so I have not been on the bike much but, I am doing some light weight training and walking which I think has helped keep the gain to a minimum. I can not wait for the weather to break.

Got on the scale for the first time in two weeks. I didn't gain any but I deserved to. What a country!

Gained about 9 pounds. Terrible feeling. Hard workouts, ride as much riding as possible with the weather and a drastic diet starting Monday morning. Is this why I dislike January so much every year?
Had a pretty bad fall, non cycle related couple months back has me laid up . Just starting to feel good again. Injuries similar to severe whip lash. Im semi retired but havent been able to work even a day and its cold here which dont help.
Got my work cut out for me,ive gained 25lbs.:cry:

I resemble that remark!!
yes but not sure how much, haven't looked at scale yet, maybe today.
Belt is getting a tad tighter. I have not been riding hardly at all this winter either, maybe a ride once a week on the mtb and that is about it.
I wouldn't consider it the "holidays" if I had to step on a scale. I probably won't take that "step" until the first week in February. By then, I'll be back to where I was from where (don't really know for sure) I might be now.

Yes! Oink, oink, oink.
Yes, but for me it's the wine and not the vittles. Not so much weight that it's impossible to shed quickly. Back on the occasional glass routine now.

Up 8 pounds since Thanksgiving. I can live with that. NOW, at the end of next month, I need to be back in the 212 range.
No gain...but I rode 200+ miles between Christmas Eve and New Years day...that probably helped.:giver:
I rode about 350 miles from the 19th of December to January 1.
I still put on 5 lbs.
Too much beer.
Damn.

How can that be?

Ditto this. I added 50 pounds last year. And no, I'm not proud of it.

HI,
Why do they make all those Cookies, Pies, and Cakes, and then my weaknes is Carmel holiday popcorn.
Then there's family get togethers with extra heavy foods, like ham, turkey with Gravey, stuffing, Vegatbles dripping in butter. and those mashed taters..
Can you resist all those special holiday beverages like German Beer, wheat beer..
I thought I heard a moan from my bike the otherday it must have been the cold.

We've had a unusually wet and cold December. As a result, I've only ridden 75 miles outside on the bike in the last five weeks. The result of that is 5 lbs and I had to pull out my fat jeans.

Checked the scale for the first time since my foot operation on Dec 1. I only gained 5 lbs, a big relief!!! I also started to get onto the trainer this week and should dispense of the weight quickly now that the holidays' foods and drinks are a thing of the past.

Did anybody not gain weight over the holidays!? :D You'd probably get fewer answers to that question. I gained about 8 lbs. I just need to get a new wheel so I can start riding again. I guess I'll have to get on the mountain bike until the road bike is fixed.

I'm up about 6 pounds. Some of that weight is the high-protein high-fat stuff. Most of it however is because my cycling time is down from 7-10 hr/wk to 2-3 hr/wk. My commuting season ends with daylight savings time.

I guess I'm 180 degrees out of synch. I normally shed a few pounds over the winter because I'm more active during the cooler months. I hate heat.

Didn't gain a bit. Of course, I was already 25 lbs overweight.
I have one pair of pants that are always a little tight. I call them my gauge pants. Currently I can barely button them. I now have them hanging in my closet on my shoe rack so every time I go in to get a pair of pants they remind to slim down.
Gained about 3lbs during my two week vacation but they are melting away since returning to work where I do not eat lunch. :)
I made an effort to watch what I ate and exercise so this year I only added a pound or two and since I was working out every day I am at a higher level of fitness so I can shed those few pounds faster.

Three major holidays within six weeks.. Winter being a season that lessens the possibility of exercise for many of us.. The stars just seemed aligned against those who think diet will work wonders..
.Is there anyone who does not gain weight during that period of time..?.
I gained a few but lost them again on the trainer.
Im back down to my pre-holiday weight of 185.
Yes, i'm not a clyde by weight(though I was a couple of years ago) , but I am a clyde by volume.....6'2"
Since im unlikely to lose any height, I will remain a clyde for the rest of my days.........a nice home with good company.

Went to Calif where it's warm, rode every day for a week, and when I came home I had lost 3 pounds, and now I'm down 5. I've been calorie counting and exercising almost every day. I don't like all that sweet stuff after about the 2nd day.
