Bicycle Mechanics - Shimano ef 29 shifter

I broke the right shifter on my 2003 Wahoo today. It's an Alivio ef 29 8 speed and I don't know if it can be fixed. They don't make it anymore and I'm probably gonna have to find a replacement if I can't fix it. I know this is a low end part but I have a kid in college and I can't put a lot of money into this. How much trouble is this going to be to fix?:crash: I MUST ride. Right now the bike is stuck in the smallest ring on the cassette and won't move even if I move it with my hand. HELP HELP forum friends!!!

They are switchable between v-brake and cantilever.

It's not too hard to do. The thing to look for is whether the shifter and brake lever are combined or separate so that you can get the appropriate replacement part.

As a stop gap, you could disconnect the rear derailleur's cable and use the high limit screw to lock the derailleur in a larger cog. You would then have a 3-speed bike (the three chainrings) and not be limited to the smallest cog.

What won't move? Where are you pushing? If you can't move the derailleur by hand it probably won't be the shifter at fault.
Try pulling the cable somewhere along the downtube and see if it will shift. (remember you need to move the pedals forward to complete a shift) If that works it might be the shifter. If that doesn't make it shift, try disconnecting the shift cable at the derailleur and try to move the derailleur by hand. You may have a cable issue.

The thumb lever won't engage. It was making a popping noise, then went limp. Pushing it has no effect. I'll try what you said tho. I'm a small businessman and between Christmas and finishing out the year I'm busted. The prices on the EF 50 looked reasonable.

Looks like you can buy either v-brake- or cantilever-compatible ones, but I'm pretty sure they aren't switchable between the two.
