Mountain Biking - What a sad day

Hello all, I just wanted to share a sad story, and ask a question.
So my wife surprised me with a new mountain bike for Christmas. It wasn't anything super special, a dawes from bikesdirect, and I know some don't prefer their bikes, but it was my first mountain bike, and I was extremely excited. I get it the 22nd, and we have to go out of town the next day, so i put it in my shed, shut and lock the door, looking forward to riding it when I get home, today, Jan. 3. I go to my shed and its gone. I look everywhere. Finally filed a police report, and tomorrow I'm filing a claim with my renters insurance. It goes without saying how much this sucks.
The thing about it is though, they could have taken so many other things in my shed, another bike, my trainer, trailer, etc. Stuff worth another few hundred dollars. Also, I never got around to putting on the front disc brake, at the time I didn't have the correct tool, so its missing the front brake. Any ideas as to where to look? I've been checking Craigslist, but are there any other places that buy used bikes? (although its basically brand new) I'm going to contact the local bike shops tomorrow and ask if they've done any repairs on that model bike dealing with a front disc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Keep checking Craigslist and the LBS for your bike ... it should be easy to spot without the front disc brake.

Also contact BD and see if they will work with you on a new bike ... :thumb:

If you reported the serial number to the police it should make it easier to find if it turns up at a Pawn shop. Well, if you were in Colorado, not sure in other places.

a crappy new year it is, so far. luckly, i normally keep my road bike in the same shed, which is worth three times as much, and they didn't get that one, so i'm lucky as far as that goes. i'll keep checking craigslist. the sucky thing is, i didn't write down the SN, seeing as it was only in my possession for about 12 hours, most of which i was sleeping. and BD said they don't keep SN on hand. we'll see, i'm going to contact them anyway.

I keep my bikes inside my house, in the living room. That is how much I love my bikes. We don't have a lot of theft in my town, but it does occur.

After reading this, though, I think I am going to get a bike rack that I can attach to the cement in my garage, and use a couple kinds of locks to lock up the bikes. The kids here who do steal bikes are not sophisticated enough to pick locks. Having my bikes stolen would just kill me! I hope you can get yours back or get another one via insurance?

Don't worry about it. Your insurance will cover it, especially since it's new and you'll get full replacement cost.

today after my bike was recovered my wife said if i wanted to she'd let me keep them inside.
i think for now on i'm locking both road and mountain bike together, onto my bike rack in the shed, making it nearly impossible to get away with without the key. as well as taking my front wheels inside.

Better check your deductible...most run from $500.-$1000. Good luck..nothing worse than a bike thief.

Sorry to hear that exact same thing happened to me two of my bikes got stolen from my storage in my garage, I did file police reports but since I live in a huge city I will never see my bikes again. :(

Thieves don't care who they steal from as long as they get theirs. There are people who are physiologically incapable of feeling empathy. If they don't care about other people and don't think they'll get caught, why wouldn't they steal? Or it could have been a junky stealing for drug money. Desparate people... Or simple selfishness, who knows. In any case, I'm sorry this happened to you.

It doesn't matter to a thief. Years ago my father used my car when he was asked to be a guest speaker at another church. When he got in the car to drive home he noticed my stereo system and speakers were gone. The thieves even broke part of the dash while doing it.

Another time while working a booth at our church fair in my teens, I noticed the kid next to me pocketing some of the cash! This story had a happy ending though, because when he went to go home at the end of the night he found out his bike had been stolen! :roflmao2:

Hey Trickcunningham, that is as crappy a New Years surprise as could happen. They not only took the bike but your wife's gift that she wanted you to have. Find the thief and let us know where we can find them. They deserve some bruises.

:update:
FOUND MY BIKE! Randomly. I called the local Trek bike shop to ask if anyone had recently come in the store asking for a front disk, and told them that I had gotten a new red Dawes that had been stolen, but I hadn't had time to install the front disk yet. The guy I was talking to yelled "Are you kidding me?!" his neighbor was just talking to him the day before about this red Dawes mountain bike that was new but missing a front disk, and knowing he worked in a bike shop, was seeing if he could get him one. It was being sold at a store called "Ship on Site." They sell stuff on ebay for people who don't want to. So I went over to the store, not even 5 minutes away from my house, and there it was. So I had to jump through a few hoops, getting the police report, etc, but I finally have it back!
So thats advice to anyone who gets something stolen from them, check stores like that!

Yeah they're either really smart or really not.. There's many reasons people would steal things, and usually desperation is one of them. Feed their family or what ever, who knows.

another update:
so i accidentally found out the person's name who was trying to sell it at that store, and i couldn't remember his name for a day or two, until this morning as soon as i woke up i remembered his last name, so i googled him, and the first link to come up was an article online from the local newspaper 2 years ago, this same guy was being arrested for possession and intent to sell marijuana at his high school. his story that he told the police was that he bought the bike from someone in the gas station in town, and he decided to sell it.
when i was at the police station the day i got the bike back, the officer said that he contacted this guy, and told him that he needed to come in for questioning, and if he didn't that he would have a warrant out for his arrest. the officer wasn't playing around!
