I bought some Bike Planet 700c 'hardcore' fenders for my Redline, thinking they would fit.... well they do if you force them, but that can't be correct. Anyone know the stock size?

I don't know, but I also don't think it matters. Just measure the clearance at the fork and the brake bridge, then match it up with a fender of appropriate width. Or better yet, bring the bike over to a shop and try out several fenders. By not fitting, I assume you mean they're too wide, yes? Are these the 45mm hardcores?

I had a choice either to get the hardcore 700c or hardcore 700c x 20/28. I went with the 700c. They do feel that their slightly too wide. The width of the fenders are advertised as 42mm.

Hardcores come in a 45mm "hybrid" model advertised to fit up to 35mm tires and a 35mm "road" model that fits 28mm tires. Sounds like you got the hybrid model. Is the only problem that they're slightly too wide? If so, the 35mm should work. If they seem not to fit in other ways (e.g. they don't seem to follow the curvature of the tire), you'll likely have the same issues with the road model. It often takes some tinkering to get them to fit properly.
