Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Nishiki Prestige - value please?

Hi, does anyone have an idea of the approximate fair value of a Nishiki Prestige, Mid to Late 1980s model, 27"with Tange 2 tubing, double butted chromoly steel in good condition. It was my bike, rode nicely and was fabulously lightweight (I really loved that part since I need to walk up 2 flights). I recently lent to a neighbor who damaged it beyond repair. He offered to compensate me, so hence my inquiry. Thanks! Aa

Are you really sure it is a 27 inch model? I don't think they made one that size. My guess is that it is a 19 inch model. Bike sizing comes from the size of the frame.

I sold a 1986 model during bicycle season for $250. It was in perfect condition, totally refurbished and ready to go. Around here, that would be full market price. Mine had 700c wheels. If yours had 27 inch wheels, its value would be less, maybe $200.

If somehow the bike has a 27 inch frame, its value would be significantly less due to the limited market for extra large bikes.

Note, valuation based on my experience with a 1986 model, which was a fairly high end bike: Tange 2 frame, Cyclone II components, aero brake levers, etc. Around here, good vintage bikes (cromoly frame, alloy rims, cranks, bars, seat post, frame mounted RD, down tube shifters, etc) start out at about $175, and work up from that amount based on component grade and brand as well as condition.

Thanks Thrifty Bill. Yes you are correct, the wheels were 27" not the bike frame. Your help with this is greatly appreciated. I do so loved how lightweight it was. Oh, well...

to bad about your bike. if oyur friend is nice and gives you 250 you should easily be able to replace it. perhaps there is a even a BF member near you willing to help and will also take the old bike in trade for parts.

$250 if you can find one. There was a beauty at a century last fall, and when asked about it, the guy said "I got it at a thrift shop last week." Buzz kill.

$175-200 depending on your market.

The 27" wheels downgrade the value signicantly and indicate it should be a the circa 1985 model, which I would classify as barely above entry level. I live in a faily depressed area and this bicycle would not sell for more than $75 US. I couldn't imagine it going for $200 US in any market except something like NYC. To get $250, it would have to be NOS, unridden, as they originally sold for not much more than that.
