Recreational Cyclocross and Gravelbiking - building a 1x9... what inner ring replacement would you suggest? Teeth?

So I'm about to buy a crosscheck frame and use the following parts for my 1x9 drivetrain.
Ultegra Compact crankset/bb
Ultegra Rear Derailleur
Campy 9speed ergo
I'm looking for a replacement inner and outer bashguard of some sort. Anyone have any recommedations on a good replacement (bcd 110) as well as an optimal size to compliment my 12/26 cassette? I'm going to be using this for primarily for commuting and weekend CX.

- 44t front
- BBG bashguard
- Jumpstop anti-chain drop thingy
- XTR short cage rear derailleur
Never dropped a chain. The gearing is good for everything from commuting to CX racing to fast training rides to criteriums. Seriously, it does it all.

My CrossCheck is a 1x9, have used 11-34 cassette with 34, 39 and currently a 44 t chain ring.
Stock CrossCheck gear range is 2.9 x, the 11-34 is almost 3.1. 44 ring and 11-34, gives a gear inch range very close to stock.
Swapped chain rings based upon tires and terrain I was riding over.
Probably next summer I'll need to replace the cassette and RD, think I'm going to use the 12-36 cassette, a 42 chain ring, XT rear deraileur and the Paul Chain keeper.
My SUV commuter is an 11-34 with 36 t chain ring - over 3000 km in 2009 on this set up. Used 11-34 SLX cassette, SLX RD with DA bar end shifter. Third eye chain watcher and Salsa ringdinger kept the chain in place - pic below.
ps- I don't race, my bikes are for utility and pleasure riding.

I am running a 42T ring (no ramps or pins), a BBG 42T bashguard, and a dogfang inner keeper. I pair that to an 11-34 cassette shifted through a Shimano XT gs rear derailleur which is needed due to the large cassette. With this setup, I can spin to over 30mph using the 42/11 combo and have a good climbing gear using the 42/34 combo.

I used a 44t with a 12-27 cassette. This provided for 20 to 28+ mph group ride travel and up to 40mph if aided by gravity.
I ride on the road, so steep hills are not common for me. I was always able to climb some of the short-but-steep terrain in hilly Wisconsin, and my legs are not as young as they used to be.
I would want wider gearing if I lived among longer & steeper climbs.
I used two salsa "Crossinguards" on each side of the chainring. I positioned my chainring on the outside, the chainline was perfect.

most people i know who run 1x9 or 10 usually use a 38t-42t chainring, so id say go with a 39 or 40, they seem to be the more popular.
When I ran 1 x 9 last season I used a sugino 42 tooth ring, BBG guard, and dog fang. depending on your frame and bottom bracket width, the dog fang may not reach out far enough. In that case, an n-gear jumpstop will work great and only costs slightly more
