So I went riding with a local group last night and usually I can keep up fairly well. I work hard, but that's what group rides are for sometimes. Last night it was cooler than usual and the wind was ripping out of the North. I struggled the whole way. I could barely stay on someone's wheel and it felt like the wind was hitting me all the time. By the end of the 40 mile ride I got dropped at one of the last hills. I just could not keep up. My legs were more exhausted than usual. The last 3 miles were fairly flat so I stayed about the same distance behind the pack by myself. Eventually the last half mile I somewhat caught up but I was just worked. I kept replaying what I had eaten during the day and why my legs were so wrecked. Hopped off the bike at my car and started to walk it and I noticed something. One of the rear brake pads was touching the rim. Not just in one place as if the wheel was out of tru, but the whole freakin' rim!!! :p Well now I feel a little better about my lack of performance. Guess I got a little bit better of a workout. Needless to say I am going to be checking that before I head out from now on. I always seem to learn these things the hard way, :( .

Lance had the same problem in one stage of the 2003 Tour.

Had the same problem several years ago with my New Lemond Zuirch Turned out that the rear Rolf wheel had been built without loctite on the nipples. The LBS trued the wheel. Next ride same thing.....
Second time back they loctite everything and no problems since. Only thing is paint wore off whee tire was rubing the frame!!!!

Sometimes I have one of those days where I'm just bonked and I'll check my brake pads hoping that they are touching. Then coming to the realization that they are "NOT" touching and I just bonked for real!

Makes me think of Lance 2003, but I remembered it motivated him!

Sometimes, when I ride with one of the young hammerheads, I will tighten his rear break just so I can keep up.
