This is an example of how bikes are stolen on campus.

A few things you can determine from the picture.
1. College is wasted on this person.
2. This person has no concept of how a lock works.
3. They have great luck, the bike was still there four hours after I first walked past it.
4. My new phone takes nice pics.

No picture is showing. Reading this post does remind of the time I saw a pretty decent looking bike locked to itself on campus. I don't know if it was taken or not, but it looked close to my size and I was, sadly, tempted.

Even the average ghetto high-school dropout knows better than this.

It is a girl's bike, that is why it is still there.

Believe it or not, there still be some crooks who will be desparate (or dumb) enough to still try to hacksaw that cable.

Bet they would be totally dumbfounded when they found the cable there lying intact with no bike. Some people are just that stupid.

Any thief smart enough to know he doesn't have to cut through that cable to snatch that bike also knows that he'd look mighty suspicious riding a brand-new women's step-thru.

They don't seem to believe it when I tell them you can strip most of the components off a bike in a minute or two using a 5mm hex wrench and a small pair of compound bolt cutters. Who needs a frame and wheels when you've got a backpack full of anonymous pricey components?

Some LBSs stock the more common sizes (therefore they're the ones buying them in bulk). Ask your shop if they have any; I'm sure they'd sell you how ever many you need. Then you'd just need to buy the tool

Not all college campuses are a hangout for bike thieves. Still, sometimes you learn the hardway.

Thanks for the input Beanz, I did leave them a note but there is not much else I can do with 20,000 students on campus. As an update, the bike was still there this morning. I am wondering if it may be bait placed by campus security. OSU has plenty of bike thieves.

Actually, a security Torx driver would not work on the pictured example. You would need to find one of these:

The chances that an opportunistic thief would carry a security Torx driver (or a security hex key, for that matter) are likely quite slim. In any case there are even better alternatives such as the Key-Rex System (http://www.brycefastener.com/page.asp?homeID=66) by Bryce Fastener. You are given a custom key to go with your fasteners. Pretty sweet, but I'm confident that my security hex bolts will defeat all but the most well-equipped thieves. After all, they are looking for easy targets, not challenges.

I live in a college town and I am amazed at the number of stripped down bikes still locked to the bike racks. Also, I have seen completely rusted out bikes still attached with flat tires. I think campus security goes around at the end of the spring semester and removes them sometimes. There are bike I swear have been there for 2 years or more. It's like the kids graduated but didn't feel like bringing their bike back home with them.
