If you're not convinced that Dept. store bikes can be hazardous to your health check this link out. I know the info here is a couple of years old, but it is a good example of the engineering that typically goes into this caliber of bike.

My advice to anyone knew to the bike world. PLEASE try your hardest to avoid Department store bikes. Spend the extra money and go to the local bike shop and get a reliable bike. Also talking to the guys who work at the LBS wouldn't hurt either. They can answer all your questions.

No kidding. If you test ride a dept. store bike, then test ride a bike at the LBS, the difference can be felt immediately. LBS can point you to a bike appropriate to the use you have in mind. Can't count the times I've seen people riding knobby tired MTBs that I'm pretty sure have never seen the dirt around on the paved trails at the local park.

The paved trails are the only safe places for Dept. store bikes to be riden (if even that). I have nothing against Dept. Store MTB's but you'd be better off buying from the LBS. (Not you, Buzzbomb) I meant anyone.
