Are we shooting WD 40 into our Hyperglide Cassettes/Free Hubs to try to soften up the grease that is too viscous to allow the pawls to re-engage after brief moments of coasting? Do I have to buy a cassette tool and a chain whip and remove the cassette in order to get the oil where it has to go? HELP! If the hub slips at 10 degrees, what will it do at minus 10? I just bought a wheel set from a CL seller that has my first ever free hub - a Shimano STX RC... It's slipping a bit too much for comfort. :twitchy:

Alright you are going to get some 'don't you dare put WD-40 in your freehub' but I'll answer your question. No, you don't have to strip things down. it'll help, but you don't really have to.

Make sure you have a straw on your wd-40, don't go shooting willy-nilly. Pop your back wheel off to make things easier, and take your skewer out if you are so inclined. Your freehub is directly under your cassette, so shoot for the seal around your cassette lockring.

If you are slipping at 10F, it'll be worse at -10F. If you are brave and mechanical, you can do this:

Or pay $15 to have him do it.

Thanks! Yeah I saw that at icebike. I don't think I'm gonna open it up. I have another wheel set with a screw on free wheel that I'll set up this weekend. I was just anxious to try the new (to me) wheel set I had got from that CL seller. It'll still be there this spring...

I was beginning to wonder if I would get any responses to the thread much less the "death to WD 40" replies! The wheel set was dirty when I bought it - they had sat in a garage and had bird poop on 'em so I blasted it at the car wash. The WD 40 was to try to force water out of there.

icebike is a cool site. It does not seem to be active anymore - maybe I'm wrong but I have not noticed much new content. That's OK. What there is is more than enough!

that's not quite how you get a lube into the freehub...
spraying the drive side seal doesn't quite work too well because the freehub lube can really only be accessed by removing it from the hub. There's a dust cap there, and the bearings block access to the freehub pawls.
It has to come off.
