why is everyone trying to re-invent the wheel? either these work or they don't.

anyone use these in the winter? they seem to have good venting to prevent fogging. I think year-round bike commuters would benefit from using these not just dirt bike racers

Motocross goggles are often used by Mountain Bike downhillers in the summer.

They are quite scratch-resistant, but typically single-lens, rather than the fogging-resistant double-lenses found in snowboard and ski goggles.

If you can find Snowcross goggles, they also might be better for avoiding fogging in cold air.

They might work fine but I'd want to make sure they had double lenses. It's not clear wether they do or don't. Dual lenses might be a cold weather goggle thing.

Honestly I'm not seeing much obvious difference between those and ski goggles. Aside from the double lenses ghettocruiser and tjspiel mention, what's the big distinction?

The only difference is motocross goggles have tearaway holders (tearaways are thin plastic that you can remove if you get a layer of mud/grime/whatever on your goggles, useful if your dirtbike is flinging mud all over the place). As mentioned above, many are single lens. I have a pair that I have used this winter, and have had only one instance of severe fog-over (and that was when it was a humid 30 degrees).
