Mountain Biking - WHAT? No 29er thread yet?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just got signed up and looked over the forum and I noticed that there is no forum for 29er riders! Is that because they all post on this forum or there are no 29ers here? Just wondering.

What's a 29er?

What's a 29er?
OK! My bike is a Redline Monocog 29er which has 29 inch wheels instead of 26 inch wheels which is the regular size of most full size bikes. It is a single speed geared with a 32t chainring and a 16t cog. The frame is a 21" frame. The bike came with knobby tires of which I changed out with Schwalbe Big Apple balloon tires for street riding and not wear out the trail tires.132094

Alright blazer.
So, are you looking for a thread, or a forum? hmm? Perhaps if you weren't so busy "blaze"-ering you might know the difference.
Now, puff puff pass, my good man.

I've always wanted a bike to go get Coffee on. It would need one of those gyroscopic cup holders though.
I think there's a 29er thread here now, Blazerwolf. This forum is cool - - no sooner did you ask for one but you got it.

That must be a lot less flickable than a regular 26er. And slower. Not to mention only for tall people. No?

My mistake! Perhaps a new forum! I don't want to rub the mountain bikers wrong, as many are very touchy about what and who they consider to be a mountain biker!

I don't know if it is or not! I can ride between 12-14 MPH on the street. I guess it's all about the gearing. Mine are 32/16 and I am quite sure many of you can leave me in the dust! If your height makes a difference then maybe, but I saw a 5'4" girl on a 29er the other day and she didn't seem to mind those big wheels. I think it's more attitude than anything else. If you have a good attitude about your bike then the size doesn't really matter.

You really think there is that much difference in riding because your wheels are 10% larger?:twitchy:
Next we will need separate forums for people riding 11s because they can't relate to people riding 10s.:p

no one here is good enough to ride a 29er. they are too fast.
I think the MTB forum needs to be broken down further:
rigid
hardtail
full suspension
And I think the sub-forums that deal with suspended bikes need to be broken down even more:
hardtail
- Less than 4" of travel
- 4" of travel and up
full suspension
- Less than 4" of travel
- 4" to 5.99" of travel
- 6" to 7.99" of travel
- 8" of travel and up
And then within each travel category, we need to break it down by geometry and then by tire size...or should we do tire size sooner?

tire size first, that's where the fights start.
Found an intersting article on 29ers the other day. It was printed in Dirt Rag ten years ago, and Wes Williams explains how he invented the 29 inch MTB wheel as well as the "29 inch wheels are best and you're stupid if if you don't agree" 'tude that goes along with them. :thumb:
http://www.dirtrag.com/print/article.php?ID=46&category=features
Also notable is the ending comments by Ross Shafer. He had sold Salsa to QBP by then so he had nothing to gain or lose by speaking his mind.

Wow this is a wild bunch! OK on to a different subject! I will post it in this forum as it pertains to Mountain biking!

26 vs 29 is a more recent development...there have been a lot of "fights" before you came along...
rigid vs suspension
hardtail vs full suspension
v-brakes vs disc
discs - hydro vs mechanical
etc...
And most were usually rather entertaining!

I don't really care what people ride, as long as they're out there having fun. I do, however, wonder sometimes when I see negative comments about 29ers. What I wonder is if the person making the comments has ever really ridden a 29er much off road. I mean, most of us have experience on 26" bikes, and so if a person who's ridden a bunch on a 26er and then decides a 29er is better for their riding, at least they've ridden both. If someone rides a 29er enough to make an informed choice, and decides they don't like the 29"wheel, that's another thing.
For a few years there was a debate, for example, about whether rim brakes or disc brakes were better. Rim brakes, forever, man, and all that. But in reality most of those folks arguing for rim brakes had never even really ridden disc brakes. I admit, I resisted disc brakes, just because I liked my rim brakes.
Now, I'm fully enlightened.:D
There's no reason riders of different wheel sizes can't co-exist. I just posted the article because I thought it was funny how militant Wes Williams was/is, and how my chosen wheel size is now obsolete. I have nothing against the 29 inch wheel, if you like it then ride it - just don't force it on me.

I agree, the article was good, and entertaining. And I agree, different wheel sizes should be able to co-exist peacefully.:D My point in the above post was that a lot of people say they don't like 29ers, 29ers this, 29ers that......and I doubt that a lot of them have even ridden a 29er, at least not enough to form a meaningful opinion. Again, if someone really rides a 29er off road, doesn't like it, and then criticizes it, that's cool. Choice is good.

Right on! Bravo! Now I am hearing some rational thinking! I was at another forum where I was told that if I was riding a 29er without knobby tires that I wasn't even in the same league as mountain bikers! ??? Just because I don't ride off road doesn't change the fact that my bike is classified as a mountain bike! What kinds of tires and where I choose to ride shouldn't have any bearing on the conversation. Thanks!

if you don't ride off road, you may want to check out the commuter forum...would be more relevant to the type of riding you do.

Well I'm sorry but you too are wrong! This thread has everthing to do with mountian bikes and 29ers specifically! Where and how I ride my bike should have nothing to do with what thread I post in. Especially since I started this thread!
Wow, newbie logic is great! Where did I say this post was in the wrong forum? I was just giving you advice because you seem to be too slow in separating riding type from bike type.
If you ride your mountain bike exclusively on the road, you're no different than all the people in the commuting forum (shockingly, many of them use mountain bikes!). You're free to post wherever you want but people in the commuter forums will be more inclined to answer questions specific to on-road riding (i.e., your fender question).
